Big glass buildings - yawn. It's all about architectural density, in my opinion, not city blocks that look like suburban office parks. Those big glass buildings give people in the suburbs something pretty to look at, but do nothing on the streetscape / pedestrian level. Tulsa, Oklahoma has big glass buildings, too, but absolutely no people downtown because there is no street-level activity or business. Granted, Chicago is great, I'm just against people citing a skyline as the ultimate urban amenity.

I'm sure many in this country would argue 2nd place would belong to LA or Chicago.

I'm sure many in this country would argue Charlotte over Pittsburgh, too.

I agree. It's an East Coast urban environment thing, and I don't expect most people on this website to understand. Great Lakes cities, even the mighty Chicago, cannot compare to East Coast urbanity. Philly IMO is America's #2 urban built environment.

No one talks about Philly except for sports which is inevitable. Chicago is more important, even Atlanta is more important and talked about than Philly.

Charlotte is up-and-coming. They'll pass Pittsburgh in size soon. North Carolina has demonstrated a good strategic plan to up its significance. What Charlotte lacks is a strong university.

Atlanta could pass Philly in size by the end of the decade. Plus ATL has CNN, the CDC, the Carter Center, and world's busiest airport. Atlanta is rising on the global stage while Philly is declining.
