Market Sq would be the best place to look, I know there are a ton of them.

The entire Downtown neighborhood is wired for free wi-fi, as are many of the more well known neighborhoods.

I think the Crazy Mocha on Liberty and 8th is open until at least 8pm during the week.

There's a Starbucks in the lobby of the William Penn Hotel that is open until all hours. It's not an independent place, though. Other Crazy Mochas around the city are open very late, but I don't know about the ones downtown.

I'm kind of amused by the term "independent" coffee shops. Crazy Mocha is considered "independent," but it's got like 20 locations.

Where is the line? Independent from what?

I think anything other than Starbucks is independent, since there are so many of them. Yes, Crazy Mocha is a chain, but I guess I consider it small enough to qualify as independent, since it's locally owned and a little unique. They steam their coffee. How about Jitters on Walnut Street in Shadyside? That's the only one of those I know of.

It's independent in the same vein as indie films and indie music. Independent coffee shops aren't part of huge national conglomorates like Starbucks or Caribou. Crazy Mocha has many stores, but it's a locally owned business. Coffee Tree, Beehive, Quiet Storm, Kiva Han, etc. would all be independent, too.
