Not that I'm a fan of the big chains, but if they can't make it in a bustling neighborhood like SqH, what's the hope for the little guys?
This doesn't necessarily follow. Barnes and Noble might just not be making enough profit to justify keeping it open, as opposed to losing. They would use some kind of formula. Or, since they say they made a business decision not to renew the lease, that could mean the landlord wants a big rent increase and they couldn't come to an agreement, that sort of thing.

Just because these types of scenarios affected a couple of chain stores doesn't mean little guys have no hope. In a neighborhood like Squirrel Hill, I would expect the people to favor the little guys over the chains anyway.

I've heard from multiple sources now that Pittsburgh has a reputation in the retail business for being unusually fond of locallly owned places.

That is generally a HUGE +++++++++++++++++++.

An exception goes out to major bookstore chains though. On the other hand, perhaps a locally-owned bookstore person could come in and claim that market.

I always loved Portland Oregon's POWELL'S BOOKSTORE - a city block of books. Granted its a small city block, but it is still a huge store. When you are in Portland, you have no desire whatsoever to go to a chain bookstore.

Perhaps some local Pittsburgh equivalent could get in there and start up shop! The great thing about Powells in Portland is they also bought used books, so you'd have new and used books side-by-side of the same title. In some ways, it became like a library, in that you'd buy a used book and sell it back later.

There's already more than a few places in Pittsburgh such as this, though not nearly as large. Heck, even the small community I live in, just north of Pittsburgh, has book stores like this.

Good - sounds like Pittsburgh is a good place then.

Some cities have that in abundance and others just don't...sounds like Pittsburgh might be one with them in abundance - always good.

Add Morningside to the list of affordable family neighborhoods! 0

While I've never seen children riding bikes in the streets of Squirrel Hill, I have see them do so in Greenfield and Morningside.
