*Article * Did city look the other way on racy Strip District club?

Mayor says Club Pittsburgh got no special favors

Tucked neatly in the start of the strip district just a few blocks from downtown Pittsburgh's highest office towers is a private club that has recently been getting lots of press. ClubPittsburgh is private club for men that has promoted it's gym and health club as a urban escape. Also known as a bath house in most cities, ClubPittsburgh has been known as a place to meet, socialize and even have random sex for those looking for such.

The vast majority of people would have no idea from the street that such activity goes on in the building where the club is located. And the management has kept the area around the building quite clean and free of trash. And the people I know living and working in the neighborhood have not seen much in the way of loitering near the building.

Certainly in most major american downtown areas such clubs are part of the 'urban fabric' While hookers work the back of the City Paper, some clubs are the scene of 'house's of prostitution' and crusing spots for public hook ups are always 'out there' Sex on the street is part of urban america.

What is your take on such establishments ? Do such establishments influence either way the amount of random sex on the street or behavior that would hurt a neighborhood ?

*** Another large part of this story is the relationship of the owners of Club Pittsburgh with several local political heavy weights and the political fund raising relationship between such. This discussion should be seperate from this topic.

My guess is that it's become too well known, so they'll probably re-open elsewhere under a different name. Most of their clientele probably doesn't want to be seen coming and going to that place.

Oh, and as adults, I could care less what they do to each other.

As long as they keep it behind closed doors, who cares.

Ah, but frolicking on the rooftop is one of the things that got them into trouble!

Places like Club Pittsburgh are in all major cities. I think it's a chain. It has had no impact on the neighborhood at all. You don't even know it's there. To access, you have to know where the entrance is, take the elevator, and go through a vestibule. That's why the P-G story is a little fishy when it says that a complaint came from a woman who was looking for a health club and stumbled upon Club Pittsburgh and was aghast. You don't just "stumble upon" this place.

As long as everyone is consenting adults and no human trafficking is involved, the government should leave them alone.

But there is a public health concern with this kind of enterprise- particularly as the government has taken the initiative in providing care for individuals with VD or aids.

Maybe the government should step aside from that role, but as long as they have it, what goes on at this kind of establishment does affect the taxpayer and government operations. It doesn't have anything to do with "puritanicalism".
