I was hoping someone could give me an idea of commuting times into Pittsburgh. I live in Canonsburg, taking 79N to 279 into the city and I'm wondering how much time I should account for traffic in the morning. I need to be at work by 9am. Should an hour do it?

An hour should be fine unless there is an accident. Occasionally traffic gets backed up to the 279/79 interchange at carnegie.

You could also drive to South Hills Village and take the T depending on where in Cannonsburg you live. My wife does that every day, but we only live a few miles south of the Village.

I would drive to the parking garage at South Hills Village and park your car for the day and ride the train in to town.

The line of traffic in to the city in the morning is ridiculous.

An hour would certainly do it. I don't think the traffic is that bad at all. The person that told you to park at South Hills and take the T...insane! It's a 45 min or so ride from South Hills village to downtown, plus the drive from Canonsburg to South Hills = a heck of a commute. No thanks. Driving is quicker, but you'll pay a fair amount for parking. That is all that's good about taking the T...the parking would be free.

Why is that? If I'm insane, then there is a whole parking garage full of cars operated by people who must be as insane as I am.

So lets put it this way. If you enjoy sitting in a line of traffic, no matter how long it takes, that moves a few feet, then grind your brakes, then move an inch, grind your brakes some more, then watch all the morons jam on their brakes as they fearfully enter the tunnel, then by all means, have a ball.

That's not true; the port authority has closed off the bottom parking lot facing Macy's near Village Drive. You must park in the parking garage, which is two dollars a day.

Any comments/suggestions about commuting to Shadyside from Moon Township?I will need to be to work at about 7 am most mornings. My realtor is suggesting Fox Chapel primarily for a better commute

Generally it is a good idea to avoid having to go toward and past Downtown when commuting if possible, which is why a Fox Chapel to Shadyside commute would usually be much better. However, before 7 you probably won't hit much traffic anyway, in which case it is really just a question of length.

Fox Chapel is definitely a better commute---15 minutes. Moon to Shadyside could be 40 minutes to over an hour depending on traffic or road conditions.

Not true. You can't get from Shadyside to Moon within 15 minutes even in the middle of the night when there is no traffic. Completely impossible.

Even before 7 you start seeing some traffic at the tunnel. I can't think of anything in particular to recommend Moon Township over Fox Chapel unless you really need the airport constantly or something.
