I know that the nuance beneath overall population gain or loss is not discussed in the media and that is unfortunate. I have posted some perspective on this, but am tired of getting into everytime. If anyone cares to read about this from someone who researches this stuff:

BoyLocke, with the amount of optimism you have beaming from every pore in your body, you just better be grateful that you already have a partner or else I'd be gunning it out on I-80 West right now to take break down your door, sweep you off your feet, and take you out on a date! LOL! I've read a lot of your posts on this sub-forum, and you seem to be Pittsburgh's version of what I am to Scranton---a young, eccentric, hip, and optimistic gay male with grand visions for the city's future. No matter how much opposition or adversity you may face from the nay-sayers on this forum (Hell, I've been arguing incessantly with one of them on the NEPA-dominated general PA forum), never lose those rose-colored glasses. Optimists outlive pessimists; always remember that!

I fully agree with what you, Drover, and some of the others say. No, I don't live in the city of Pittsburgh, but that still doesn't mean that I can't admire it from afar. I think many of Pennsylvania's cities are on the verge of incredible cultural and economic renaissances that can be seen by all but the city's residents themselves. Pittsburgh has a new casino, new arena, new downtown living options, new Google headquarters, new American Eagle headquarters, etc. Philadelphia has a new Comcast skyscraper, new downtown living options, expanding university campuses, etc. Scranton has upcoming commuter rail access to Manhattan, an upcoming major medical school, Wall Street West, and has just landed the AAA affilliate of the Yankees as the city continues to become more closely-aligned with the Big Apple, just two hours to our east. PA is a very underrated state that is admired from afar but admonished from within.

Grew up in Pgh. It's really not a suitable place for people in their twenties. Left it three years ago and moved to Philly.

Pgh makes Philly look like a world class, progressive, well-run, cosmopolitan city.

Yes go on comparing cities of very different sizes. If truly large cities are the only place for 20 somethings, then only a handful of cities are acceptable then.

I spent a good deal of my 20s in two Rust Belt cities (Buffalo and Syracuse) and found plenty to keep me occupied. Larger cities that I have lived in since (San Francisco, Oakland, Washington, DC, and Baltimore) are largely overrated if you ask me.

You ain't whistlin' Dixie on that!

Perhaps if I lived in a better area, but our house values are such that to move up to a bigger house in a better area, I'd be looking at a 850,000 to a million dollar house.....

I found a house in Lafayette CA that was less than 700 square feet in probably okay condition and it was 659000.... -- it was probably a tear down, since it's acceptable to tear down an old house that isn't a McMansion.

I'm doing up my house now in anticipation of selling in a few years... of course, hubby doesn't want to move... he has no grand love of where we are, but he just hates moving....

Tell him you expect to get enough proceeds for the house to pay for movers...

We've been here for 20 years --- with the rises in house prices, we expect it to help fund our retirement AND pay cash for a nice big house somewhere else.

Bay Area California house prices have had incredible run ups... and even if prices fall 30 or 40%, I'm still over 300% ahead....
