Ok my fiancee and I have found a house in East Liberty that has been owned by the city for around a year. I have no idea on how to buy this house or who to get into contact with about buying it. It's under 8g's. It's beautiful. I want it. I just need some advise on how to go about getting this house.

The first thing that pops into my head when I hear "the city owns it" is that it's in arrears on its taxes. Which would lead me to ask, "how far" and "are those tax arrears included in the purchase price?" Just thought I'd raise those issues.

As for who to contact about buying it, I'm not sure. My guess is the treasurer's office, or maybe the housing department.

Default Link to Pittsburgh Dept. of Finance

I believe you need to make an inquiry through the Real Estate Division of the Pittsburgh Department of Finance. I looked into this option very briefly and felt it was too much of a headache to pursue. It is my understanding that it can take several months to over a year to complete the purchase.

There was a guy on TV news who bought a city house and got a water bill for $43,000. The place doesn't have any plumbing.

Call the City Real Estate department, they have a form that you need to fill out which primarily authorizes them to make sure you are not deliquent on any other taxes for other properties, then you submit a bid, your bid is put out for others to try to outbid, and then approved. You normally have to put up 10% of your bid as security that you intend to go through with the sale.

My advice is this. If you must deal with the city government in any way shape or form, run in the other direction as quickly as possible.
