Sounds like you have a taste of what driving here in SoCal is like! I have a 4.5 mile drive to work; I can take the freeway which is right next to my house,,,but it's always backed up and traffic never moves,,, OR I can take the main road though town, but there are 17 traffic lights in that 4.5 miles! Yes, 17! There is no easy way to drive here.

May I suggest getting a local Thomas Guide or at least a good map of Monroeville? That way you can see the alternate routes clearly, and there are some good alternate routes. I worked in Monroeville for many years and got to know all the good shortcuts!

You need to learn how to get around without getting onto Route 22.

Here's a google map of Monroeville:

monroeville pa - Google Maps

Start taking the back roads or the bypass (376/22) when it works for where you're going.

But what is the deal with the Pittsburgh area and LOOOOOONG traffic lights? Last weekend when they had the Parkway West closed inbound they changed the light in front of the Giant Eagle in Robinson to stay on red for 7 MINUTE INTERVALS. I sat there and timed it. 7 MINUTES. It was freakin' ridiculous. Traffic was backed up all the way past the Oakdale exit on 22, and no one could get of the Giant Eagle and GetGo. Why would any traffic engineer think this was a good idea?
Oh, wasn't that fun?! I ended up taking Beaver Grade Road around the traffic and it wasn't too bad. They have to close the Parkway two more times before the fall. Ughhhh!

When you say "live in this community", where specifically do you live? I mean, not asking for your specific address, but do you live in the city? As my profile says, we live on the east side of the city, but rarely, if ever, go to Monroeville. I've lived in this "community" for almost three years now, and there are just areas I don't go to because of the ridiculous non stop traffic.

I agree with you about the nonsensical traffic, but that's because everyone thinks they have to flock to areas like the Monroeville shopping distrcit to get what they want.

I think it was pretty clear that the OP lives in the Monroeville area.

I lived out that way years ago, probably the ugliest commercial strip in America is the Route 22 corridor. McKnight Road a close second, at least it's cleaner. And now the Cranberry Rte 19 and 228 strip. At least it's newer and cleaner.

There are always back roads to all 3 areas, but they are getting busy also. Maybe not so much in Monroeville, I see that as a declining area.
