I am retired and my wife will be retiring by November, or sooner, depending on her health. Our preferences are:

Price up to $175k (will go higher for a really great house)

Do not want homes right next to me. (Our dogs bark and I don’t want to hear noise from neighbor’s kids or dogs

Need a major hospital within 10 miles. (my wife has cancer)

Want to be near a major supermarket and in close proximity to a large shopping mall.

Good library close by.

Must be a safe area.

A town with a walkable downtown area would be a plus.

Also, is it possible to rent a house so we could acquaint oursleves with the area while looking for a house to buy?

Any help would be greatlcy appreciated.

Well, Aspinwall is a nice town, but it is a town, that is why it will be hard to find a town with neighbors not close by. Otherwise, it would be a suburb with half acre plots. Towns tend to have denser populations than prototypical suburbs. How close is too close? I mean, there may be more seperation between the houses in some towns as opposed to others. I would not expect more than tweny feet in most areas in any town. Then it wouild be more rural in nature. I mean this with all due respect. I just need more specific info regarding closeness of neighbors. Aspinwall has all of the other criteria that you are looking for.

It does plan UPMC St. Margret's is 5 minutes away, or across the street if you are on the far end of Aspinwall.

nuwaver88,

We don't want to be in the boonies. I would say about 100-150 ft away. A little further would be OK too.

You may want to look into Oakmont also. That is a good neighborhood that meets most of your criteria. It is not as close to a hospital as Awall. You may find some places up on the hill with space between the houses. There is a very nice walkable town a library also. If I were retired and fairly healthy and fairly well off, I would pick Oakmont if I wanted a nice town atmosphere.

I would suggest Oakmont also except you aren't going to find houses 100' apart even up on the hill. Maybe 40' - 50' apart. At the top of the hill (PA Ave.) is a park/woods where people take their dogs. Nearest hospital is St. Margarets actoss the river beside Aspinwall. Small mall with Giant Eagle next town over. Pgh. Mills about 7 miles and 20 minutes to Monroeville. There's a lot of houses for sale so you might be able to rent. Call Frankie at Riverview Real Estate. He grew up there.

I agree with PeterRabbit. If you want houses to be at least 100 feet apart, there is no way to find that in a town. Frankly, most subdivisions have homes much closer to that. In mine, my neighors are 30 feet away on each side. I bet you need a subdivision with at least a two or three acre lots. If the 100 feet requirement is a deal breaker, you are probably looking at homes in rural areas.

I don't plan on retiring in Allegheny county, property taxes are too high. Check out Cranberry, they have a growing hospital out there.

We don't want to live in a subdivision. We live in one now and the houses are about 20' apart. I guess we would want something in the country but not in a desolate area.

When I use the word town I mean a place that is smaller then a city. Do people in PA use another term?

I don't know how much we want to pay for rent, that would take some investigation to see what rents are like around there and what you can get for the money.

I am not restricting my search area to just Alleghany Cty and I'm open to suggestions about places in other counties.

I really appreciate all of the responses.

After reading the replies here and looking through previous threads in this section I have made a list of places to check out, I would love to hear any comments about them (pro & con).

Aspinwall
Oakmont
Beaver County
North Strabane Township
Bellevue
Moon Township
N.Fayette Township
Robinson Township
Findlay
Crescent Township
Glen Willard
Monroeville
