And assumptions are often wrong. Never did yoga in my life, but I understand it helps many people, but I'm not sure it's really exotic anymore.

Investigative journalism of anything local just doesn't exist.
It goes beyond a lack of investigative journalism to outright censorship. I have seen comments deleted from media websites because they were critical of this mayoral administration, not because they were offensive or libelous. It's disgusting. Pittsburgh is politically like the Soviet Union - one Party in power, the Party insiders select the candidates, and the media stifles dissent.

With the Wilson Center - nobody is asking if City/County officials are re-examining allocating millions of dollars from the limited public coffer to finance operations of an institution that has just been criminally charged with theft.

Nobody is asking why the murder rate is so high. The only reporting I've seen on that was placing the blame on Raventstahl for failing to implement the Pittsburgh Initiative to Reduce Crime a few years ago - but that argument didn't carry water as the murder rate didn't continually rise.
Nobody is asking why there were less murders last year when we had a mayor who didn't come to work and a police chief on his way to federal prison for embezzling money from a slush fund to buy booze than we do this year? Discipline issues within the Police Bureau are so pressing, and the crime rate is so high, and the Great Progressive's answer was to have his officers wear service dress caps (at the cost of $50 per officer - so you're looking at tens of thousands of dollars for flipping hats)!!

Nobody in the media dared to ask him why he was gallivanting around Scandinavia riding a bloody bicycle instead of looking for his next police chief.

Nor has anybody asked any questions about his hiring practices - which have been an abysmal series of scandals. I hope the funders of Talent City (which has turned out to be such a crock) don't waste their money on such a stupid initiative in the future.

Oh! Maybe there needs to be some sort of non-profit-motivated media!
"The notion of the press as watchdog is more than 200 years old. Yet the idea of vigilant
media monitoring government and exposing its excesses has gained new traction in many parts of
the world. Globalization, the fall of authoritarian and socialist regimes, and the deregulation of the
media worldwide have fuelled a renewed interest in ––as well as a surge in efforts by various groups
to support–– “watchdogging” by the media.**

Since the late 17th Century, classical liberal theorists had argued that publicity and openness
provide the best protection from the excesses of power. The idea of the press as Fourth Estate, as an
institution that exists primarily as a check on those in public office, was based on the premise that
powerful states had to be prevented from overstepping their bounds. The press working
independently of government, even as its freedoms were guaranteed by the state, was supposed to
help ensure that this was so."

So, do you read the Post-Gazette or the Tribune-Review?

Both - sometimes one covers something the other didn't.
I prefer the Trib though - I have little respect for the Post's partisan slant, and many of their reporters are quite rude and entitled.

But the Trib's partisan slant is a-okay?

The Post is nowhere near as liberal as the Trib is conservative.

Why is it the mayor's fault that blacks are gunning down other blacks seemingly daily over petty drug-related or petty gang-related issues? Do you want him to stand on Frankstown Avenue or Climax Street and say "YOU PEOPLE NEED TO WISE UP!"? Do you have any idea how racist, elitist, and "out-of-touch" the liberals in this city would proclaim him to be if he did that?

How are middle-class whites supposed to stop blacks from killing each other in this city, tyovan4, without coming off as condescending racists? I'm just curious as to what your answer is for that. Blacks need to fix Homewood, The Hill, Sheraden, Northview Heights, etc. The "white" solution would probably be to put up a Starbucks and a yoga studio and hope everything fixes itself.

Sheraden, just for the record, is and was always a majority of whites.

But, regardless of whether you are talking about depressed majority-white communities like Sheraden, Carrick or Allentown, or the black hoods particularly those south and north of the rivers, I don't think that the current city administration really pays any attention.

Its fine that East Liberty is attracting new businesses and google and all that, but the Route 51 valley (for example) could be a real showplace but now is basically a dump. The area at the bottom of Nobles Lane and Whited St. looks like heck, they still haven't cleaned up the site of the fire where the Bottoms Up Club more than a decade ago. That club used to attract city council people in its hey day not that terribly long ago.

You mean the liberal Post-Gazette that endorsed Corbett for governor four years ago? The PG is centrist at best.
