Hi, I'm from New York and I'll be coming out to Pittsburgh at the end of July to celebrate my friend's birthday. It's her 21st and I'm 21 as well. I don't drive and my non-driver's New York State ID is still being processed. I've used my passport to show I'm of age in NYC to gain entrance to bars and clubs but I'm concerned I'll put a damper on my friend's birthday festivities by not being able to get into the places she wants to go. I am indeed of age, I'm just wondering if anyone knows if Pittsburgh doormen/bouncers tend to refuse to accept U.S. passports as legitimate proof of age or I won't need to worry. Thank you!

Yes, out here in flyover country they do in fact recognize a U.S. passport as legal identification. Just be prepared for having to use our outhouses, since we haven't gotten indoor plumbing yet.

I would honestly try to bring a second form of ID....anything else with your name on it that's somewhat official. MOST bars should accept your passport (it's illegal not to!), but I have seen them deny it on occasion. Namely at Mad Mex in Oakland. I have no idea how this is even possible, but they still do it.

I am imagining bouncers scratching their heads, tilting the passport left and right, trying to use the passport as a hammer, attempting to lick the passport, etc. "WHAT THIS STRANGE SHINY PAPER MEAN!" they say as they beat the OP with their wooden clubs.

It might be an issue if the bar has one of those dealies where they swipe your drivers license. Otherwise, it is a legal form of ID--probably unusual to see at a bar, but legal nonetheless.

Of course, there are plenty of bars where your age is of no real consequence anyway. (Or at least there were when I was under 21.)

I've been denied with a passport, but that was a while ago, and you probably won't be visiting those kinds of places anyway.
