U.S. trims 13 more stadiums from World Cup list - U.S. Soccer - ESPN Soccernet

I'm sure there was no chance we would have landed it anyway. However, this is an international event that would truly raise Pittsburgh's profile and actually be within our means of hosting. Not to mention the millions of dollars and festive, cosmopolitan atmosphere it would bring. If only our leaders would have invested effort in campaigning for this instead of the G-20.

DID we campaign for the G20?
I thought Obama practically handed it to us....

The hell with soccer, it's a commie sport. People cheer when teams tie.

I was in Orlando in 1994 when they hosted World Cup and it was INSANE. The streets near the downtown bars were just packed with wall to wall people drinking and celebrating. Think Carson Street after the Steelers won the Super Bowl but add so many more people that you could not walk across the street without squeezing through a sea of humanity every inch of the way.

I don't think Pittsburgh would have handled this well.

I don't see how this was an either/or proposition with the G20. Generally, we're not going to get every big event.

Really? I disagree entirely. You do know that selected cities would only host about six matches, not the entire 64-match tournament.

I think that Pittsburgh might need some more hotel rooms, but the North Shore Connector would help transportation infrastructure for those staying at downtown hotels.

Plus, the airport is designed for millions of more passengers than it currently serves, so there would be no problem there.

Can you be more specific why you think Pittsburgh couldn't handle it?

6 games? My office is closing down for the G-20! I think 6 games might be tough to swallow for my company!

I'm not knocking Pittsburgh. I'm actually proud to live in a city where businesses cut employees slack when it comes to events causing a gridlock commute.

Well, I lived near Boston when a few World Cup matches were held up there in '94 and I agree that Pittsburgh couldn't handle it. The games were about 45 minutes outside Boston and everyone without tickets was in a bar in Boston. Just think if the fans for the Steelers and Cardinals (and a few others just because) were all in the same place at the same time totally drunk.
