I know you've all by now seen the press conference back in May when WH Secretary Robert Gibbs announced Pittsburgh as the next location for the G-20 summit. There was laughter by many journalist in the room when Pittsburgh was announced as the next location. How did you all feel about that disrespect? Was it expected, or were you alarmed by it? Do you all (Pittsburgh residents) believe that this is yet another example of the media only believing that three locations (DC, NYC & LA) are the only locations in the U.S. that matter?

I think it's just another example of how hard it is for a city to lose a negative image.
It's not like those jouralists are the first or last people of any profession or nationality to be misinformed about Pittsburgh.

I think everyone rolls their eyes when we read an article about Pittsburgh that starts out with "Contrary to what you might think, Pittsburgh isn't entirely a sh*thole!" Most people have a terrible preconception of what Pittsburgh is like, and that usually changes once they see it for themselves.

Pretty much. Their pejorative term is "flyover country", and even if some of them aren't quite that explicitly dismissive, it is how they have been taught to think.

I honestly think a lot of it has to do with much of their success being based on their ability to suck up to other elites (aka their "sources"). After a while, you are either going to internalize the smoke you have been blowing, or quit the profession, so what is left is a bunch of elitists.
What I find most hilarious is how in their pundit role, they love to talk about how ordinary people will react to events. Like they would have a clue.
By the way, this is all in reference to journalists for major outlets doing things like covering the White House beat. It may not apply to other journalists (although I do think the sucking up to the elites issue is a frequent problem in journalism).

I've seen many new journalists with that attitude too. It doesn't matter if they're covering the White House or some small town. Most come out of college that way.

If the OP is a journalist looking for a story, the OP will probably write that we were highly offended or continue looking until he/she finds Pittsburghers who say they were.
There's so much less interest in finding the truth, and more interest in finding people or facts to validate their own preconceived opinion or story angle.
