I've been to The Rivers, honestly I wasn't all that impressed with it and I agree the location of it flat out stinks. For starters downtown Pittsburgh isn't exactly known for being tourist friendly, partially due to the parking situation in your city. Although I do think the overall look of the structure looks neat from outside. I live not too far from Wheeling Island honestly there is no reason for me to go The Rivers over the Island...Island has a way better parking situation, no seedy looking people walking around outside the casino, an excellent buffet that is only 9.99 all this month from Sun-Thur, etc. If I left The Rivers with a wad of cash at night I would honestly be afraid of getting mugged. I'm sure I'll go back to The Rivers sometime but honestly I don't think I would ever make a special trip just to go there.

Last week, I was in Manchester and decided to drive down to the casino.

It's a TERRIBLE location. I had a difficult time finding my way to it even though I know that part of North Side very well.

It looks like crap from the non-river side----like it's just a parking garage, no grand entrance. I didn't even bother parking the car to look inside.

Two words really sum up the problem in my mind - "Curb Appeal". From the road it almost looks like a prision, since all you can see is a giant concrete slab with "Gambling Problem? Call xxx-xxx-xxxx." on the side.

Casinos should approach their business as being an entertainment destination (why do you think Vegas looks like an amusement park now?). Having no appealing front entrance (at least from a car's view) is a HUGE error on their part. Instead of a seeing a nice entertainment destination to go to, I look at the casino and . . . the best way I can explain my impression is of some controlled unit where some unfortunate people go to spend their Social Security on gambling addictions, which is really depressing - this may not be true, but thats the mental vision I get from driving by.

I know it's nitpcking but two things:
1) the most popular tourist destinations in the world have parking problems (which I assume you're talking about)
2) the casino is not located downtown but with table games, I bet they wish they were.
otherwise, you seem to echo the concerns from the article. it seems it has a bad rep with the slots target market (crime, inconvenience) and lacks anything that makes it a true destination.

What parking problems are people talking about? Initially, there was some confusion on parking during Steeler games and also on the cost of parking.

Now, they seem to have cleared up the confusion and I never have any trouble parking. They have a huge garage that is free, so what's the problem?

How does the free parking in the garage work do you have to wait in line for an hour within the casino to get a ticket validation from a booth? From what I understand the concern was that people would abuse the free parking which is why they considered charging for parking in the garage. If the parking is free and hassle free then that definitely makes it a little more attractive.

Went there on a weekday afternoon for lunch in December. No hassle, drive in, drive out. I think they do validation when there's a Heinz Field event.

They made a big mistake with the design of the casino, I think they should've built the parking garage underneath the casino itself and then built a grand entrance where the parking garage now stands.
