I agree it's a pretty safe walking town. I generally walk to work when the weather is good. Now if we could only do something about the morons who run red lights while they're on their cell phones!

That makes sense: between lots of older/lower-speed streets and plenty of walkers around to keep them on the mind of drivers, I'm not surprised Pittsburgh was among the safest.

Great link Pman!

This sounds like a major health threat this at is not discussed much. You know, one of the things that might work against that is so many people are some car dependent that they simply cannot imagine walking anywhere. In some towns, it is hard to imagine going anywhere safely by foot. Glad to hear Pittsburgh ranks so high.

I moved up here from the most dangerous city on the list, Orlando. You're right, it is not safe to walk there. It's pretty much a warzone on the roads down there, everyone is speeding and running red lights. Just about every day on the news there you'll hear about a pedestrian getting hit, and most of the time, they are left to die in the road as the driver never stops.

It's NOTHING like that in Pittsburgh at all. I often complain about how slow and timid Pittsburgh drivers are, but it's not really a bad thing, I'm just so used to the aggressive driving I had to learn growing up in FL that's it's a tough adjustment.

It's safe for walking except for the heart attack I'll eventually have walking up a hill one day.

Try walking up the steps from Panther Hollow Lake to the Schenley Park proper sometime!

I still cannot believe that people used to walk up and down steps on Mount Washington on a daily basis a century ago. A time when men were men I suppose...

I can see that, it looks dense and walkable. Plus narrow roads, etc. When you have all of that, cars can't speed around everywhere, and people are use to see pedestrians.

Speaking of walkability in general. When I view google maps, I can see it!

It is funny the 'walkable scores' website...where it counters restaurants or other things. You view the maps though and see major highways and obstacles, etc. So few places in the U.S. actually are walkable.

It is great to see that Pittsburgh actually is.
