A friend and I are seriously considering a move to Pittsburgh in August 2010 from the South. I have been looking through the forums and I have found some very helpful ideas. We have looked at apartments everywhere, but are looking to stay close to downtown due to the fact that it's closer to the UPMC Mercy (probably where we'll end up working). Does anyone have any opinions about the North Shore area? I know it's close to the hospital. Is it safe? Does it have shopping close by (retail, grocery, etc.)? Are there a lot of restaurants and bars? Any advice would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!

Consider the Brookline neighborhood in the South Hills. Close to all the hospitals and downtown. Sorry, I don't have much to offer about the North Shore.

I don't know of any places to live on the north shore, except an apt complex on 9th st. I forget the name of it, but it seems decent. Allegheny West has more places available, there is also Allegheny Center apts, but those aren't very nice I hear. Manchester is in the area, but it is disgusting. Basically, the North Side can be a nasty place is you move to the wrong area. There used to be a small Giant Eagle there, but I haven't been there in years to see if it's still around. Most of the restaurants are right next to PNC Park. It's not an area I'd move to, just as the Lower Hill would be close to Mercy, but not a place I'd suggest either. The South Side is very close and you could easily get through the Armstrong Tunnels to Mercy pretty quick, even on bike if you wanted to. There are plenty of apts on the South Side and a lot more restaurants, clubs, and stores there. You didn't mention your budget, but you could live around Shady Side, Squirrel Hill, Greenfield, etc. All of those areas are close to shopping and right on the bus line that goes past Mercy and downtown, so it would be a very easy commute to work.

There isn't much on the North Shore but the two stadiums and the casino. There isn't really much of a "neighborhood" there.

UPMC Mercy is in Uptown. The South Side is literally a minute away from it (through the Armstrong tunnels) and it is the most lively neighborhood in Pittsburgh. I would strongly advise looking there instead. But, then again it matters what you want in a neighborhood. Are you looking for suburban or in the city? If in the city, what is your price-range and desire for vibe of the neighborhood, etc..?

Ditto on the North Side. It is just too hit or miss over there. You have quiet areas, little enclaves of yuppies in their refurbished rowhouses, and then large swaths of ghetto. I would not live there personally.

We will take all the advice we can get. I definitely don't want to be in the wrong neighborhood. So any recommendations would be great! Like I said, we're willing to pay a high price for safety.

Well, I'm a guy and would have no problem living at Lincoln. I know it fairly well. I've been past there several times in the past and the neighborhood is pretty much dead. Don't expect much excitement around there. There used to be a small, ghetto Giant Eagle a few blocks away though. You could walk along the river, to the Warhol, the childrens museum, the science center, casino, heinz and pnc, etc. There is also West Park next to CCAC, which is nice. You have to go over the 9th st. bridge into downtown for any real restaurants around there though, and downtown is nearly dead after 6 also. If you're looking for a nice, quiet place, then Lincoln is fine. I stand by my suggestion of the South Side though. But, the South Side does have a lot of bars and clubs, which causes a lot of drunken idiots to come out, especially on the weekend. But, if you're young then it's a fun place to live for the price. Because of your location at Lincoln, that would make your commute to Mercy longer, also. You would probably have to catch a bus to downtown, then change to another bus going east. I dunno, nothing wrong with living there, but to me it seems like more of a pain than it's worth.

Yeah. I was looking at the commute and it was only 7 minutes. That could have been a mistake on my part. We definitely don't want a long commute. I wouldn't mind a neighborhood where I can walk to work even or walk to a store. Lively neighborhoods work for us. We're in our early 20s and we're 2 single girls looking for guys (lol). We would really like in the city. I think that would be a better option (or I could be wrong...this is why we need help!). No price range. We want a place that there is definitely something to do. Noise doesn't bother us much as long as it's not freeway noise.

Our downtown is not like other cities downtowns. It closes down at 5pm and there isn't a lot going on. The action is actually in the neighborhoods surrounding where the big buildings are.

I ride my bike past Lincoln apartments all of the time (it's on the river and there's a bike trail there). Never went in personally, but it seems safe and nice. It is in a part of the North Shore that is away from the ghetto. But, as somebody said there isn't much there. There are a few restaurants/bars that are open during baseball games and that's about it. Also, to get to UPMC Mercy you will have to go through downtown which will be a massive pain in the ass during rush hour. I again suggest the South Side as it is way more lively and a quicker commute. But, South Side near Carson gets full of college kids puking and being loud on the weekends. I would advise farther down Carson near the South Side Works.

What do you think of The Encore on 7th Street? Is it in a good area?
