I have said it before and I will say it again, if someone really wanted to do something, they would resurrect the old brews and not try to start new ones.

Yes there is a higher profit margin in brewing your own creation.

If you really wanted to do something, you would brew something that has not been brewed in a long time such as Duquesne ( Duke) beer, Koehler or even Rheingold or Dubois Budweiser.

I will compare it to cartoons or old John Wayne movies. To someone that saw it before it is just a old cartoon, but to someone that never saw it before, it is brand new.
Craft brewing is a cut-throat business. Operating costs may be relatively low but startup costs are high (the equipment ain't cheap), the competition is fierce, and consequently the margins are usually razor-thin. Very few people have ever struck it rich brewing beer.

Brewing mediocre beer that probably faded from the marketplace for a reason is no more likely to be profitable, because in that market you're not just competing against other local/regional mom-and-pops, you're competing against the huge hitters (Bud/Miller/Coors) who have the resources to absolutely bury you -- the same ones who drove those other labels out of business the first time around.

Seems the issue wasn't that he gave it up to soon so much as he gave it up to the wrong people. Stumbles like this are often fatal but hopefully he gets it back on track. Even though Penn beer bores me a little, I'd hate to see the restaurant/brewpub go away forever.

Should have posted this earlier, but today's Groupon is for Penn Brewery: Pittsburgh Deal of the Day | Local Daily Deals from Groupon

Two separate dealies: $10 for $25 toward lunch, or $15 for $35 toward dinner.

Saw this deal this morning and forgot about it, thanks for the reminder! I bought one.

Penn Brewery's restaurant is really good and I dig their beer as well.

After two visits to the restaurant my thoughts are as follows:

Decent beer, affordably priced.
Great interior and ambience.
Menu is too small and could stand to be a little bigger.
Cheaper than the Church Brew works, and with better service as well.

Not a bad place overall, although if I wanted authentic German I'd go to Max's.
