Hi all, including Yac,

The swastika thread was a feisty, difficult discussion, but essential. It struck to the heart of truth, compassion, and the ability to reason in emotionally rough terrain.

I think it is a cheap copout to believe the NAZIs were an abberation of human nature, and that banning the swastika can make it all go away. All societies hold Buchenwald in their hearts, and it is pure hubris to assume otherwise. Should we ban that stars and stripes, because we methodically exterminated many societies in N. America? We need to discuss this, and to think about how to avoid cruelty and cultural supremacy. It goes far beyond banishing contentious symbols and discussions.

Still, I must admit. Ditchdigger's Schapps post was the best I have read on CD. I admire finding the profound in the debauched. We live in a sea of both.

You must not read much then. But thank you for the compliment. I'm blushing.

I think the crux of the matter is that there seemed to be a not specifically articulated belief that emotion doesn't play a role in a well reasoned thought process. A well reasoned thought process takes all factors into account, and if strong emotions are a factor, then they need to be accounted for.

For what it's worth, and without any further comment from me, there might be some insight found in the contents of this thread: rumor confirmed - Heavy Equipment Forums

(Funny that it should show up there while we were discussing the topic here...)

The compliment stands. It's market value is open to debate.

I agree that emotion is part of being alive, which is usually the backdrop for reason.

While I agree that the discussion of sensitive topics like this (at least sensitive in the PC heavy world we live in) is important, I think this is a much wider issue and the topic, at least regarding Pittsburgh, has been more or less covered. If you all feel this is not the case, I can re-open the closed thread.
We have separate forums for issues like this, namely Great Debates and Politics and other Controversies. I really believe that unless the topic is very local, it should be discussed there.
Yac.

For the record, I had nothing to do with the thread being closed.

I just posted a joke. I haven't even read one post in the thread.

Darn shame it was closed if people weren't fighting though.

Thanks for letting us talk about the closing in this thread, Yac.

If you were joking about such a serious topic, you had everything to do with it being closed.

I saw the title of this thread and knew exactly what it was about.

I think Yac makes a lot of sense though. The discussion, while fraught with difficulty, is fine. But the thread's relevance to things in Pittsburgh had long passed. The other forums mentioned do seem more appropriate for continuing the discussion as it had turned.

Agreed. I'm such a Pittsburgh homer, though, that I rarely venture into those threads. Then, when subjects come up here, I let it all fly and then the thread ends up closed. I'm not taking responsibility for that thread being closed, but I'm willing to share it.

Agreed. But I can't blame anyone for wanting to talk about something here in this forum. The poeple in the political forum are downright NASTY.

i agree with hopes. the people who frequent this particular board tend to be intelligent and friendly, and able to disagree without attacking, and i don't blame people for wanting to discuss general topics in this forum without the involvement of the crazy trolls/blowhards/idiots/pot-stirrers who frequent forums more appropriate to the subject.

on the other hand, i understand that this is not a general board, it's a pittsburgh board and the mods want to keep it that way. it's just unfortunate that the appropriate boards for some discussions are so unpleasant.
