I am actually the great great great granddaughter of Peter J. Donahoe, of was the founder of the Donahoe's market. The market started with just a little butter, egg, and coffee stand in the old Pittsburgh market in 1898. by 1933 there was 24 stores. The fifth ave store took up the whole block and was multiple floors. The stores demise came around due to family strife.

I'm pretty sure Tom Donahoe, who used to be GM for the Steelers, is a member of this family. Donahoe's was in the block across from PNC Bank of Fifth Ave., right next to GC Murphy. The very ornate building is still there.

Donahoe's was awesome. My mother pronounced it 'Dunahoos'. The smells were heavenly and I think it had wood floors. They had a cafeteria and a big lunch counter, where we ate when we went downtown. When it went out of business, a Murphy's moved in.

No, I think you're wrong the Donahoe building become a drug store, it was Revco's for a while and now its CVS. It was a different drug chain before it was Revco, white cross?

Murphys was next door.

You are correct! White Cross, then Revco. Murphy's was next door, and was open for decades in that location.

Another store that was somewhat similar to "Donahoe's" was "Mcann's". It was a block done the street on the corner Forbes (a,k,a Diamond Street" and Stanwix Street. But Donahoe's was the King.
The aroma of ground coffee, the barrel's of dill pickles, the cakes from their bakery, the cafateria on the 2nd. floor, which back then was fast food. Last but not least was "Donahoe's" potato salad which was the best. We make our own potato salad which is very good but doesn't come close to "Donahoe's". We would love to have the dressing recipe they used for their potato salad. Does anyone have or know that recipe?

I never saw Donahoe's Market, but heard about it my whole life. My grandfather and Father Joseph C. Kurtz both worked at the store and my Grand Aunt Dolly married Mr. Donahoe after his first marriage ended. I too would love to know the whole history. I know Mr. Donahoe had several son's and they must still have family in the Pittsburgh area. I have old film footage of the Donahoe estate of Mr. Donahoe on Horse back before it was sold as a home for the aging. I would love to find photo's of the home, family, and the store downtown in its hay day.

Sad if it's true that descendents killed the goose via 'family strife'.

Donohoes is one of my fondest memories of Pittsburgh of an earlier era.
