Agreed. Plus, according to the article from the PG, they're not even going to move until June. Who knows what the economy will be like by then?

Hey, I have no problem with businesses being in business to make money! I work for a for-profit business myself. I'm just saying, don't believe the hype about any business looking out so much for their employees. My spouse and I have both worked for fairly large businesses that do, in good times, have people in HR who arrange social events for the employees. We've also worked for small businesses that don't do those things. Just sayin".

Of course happy and loyal employees can be more productive employees, so depending on your business model it can make sense to do things to keep your employees happy and loyal.

Yes, and a large company like Google, selling internet search engines, can have the excess money to do that. A pediatrician's office, providing health care, usually doesn't have the kind of money to have a company "climbing wall" like Google does in Boulder. Loyalty is a problem in IT b/c people are always getting laid off.

Google Benefits:

Quote:
Google’s founders often state that the company is not serious about anything but search. They built a company around the idea that work should be challenging and the challenge should be fun. To that end, Google’s culture is unlike any in corporate America, and it’s not because of the whimsical lava lamps and large rubber balls, or the fact that one of the company’s chefs used to cook for the Grateful Dead. In the same way Google puts users first when it comes to online services, Google puts employees first when it comes to daily life in its offices.

“The goal is to strip away everything that gets in our employees’ way. We provide a standard package of fringe benefits, but on top of that are first-class dining facilities, gyms, laundry rooms, massage rooms, haircuts, carwashes, dry cleaning, commuting buses – just about anything a hardworking employee might want. Let’s face it: programmers want to program, they don’t want to do their laundry. So we make it easy for them to do both.” Eric Schmidt, CEO Google

Benefits Philosophy: We strive to be innovative and unique in all services we provide both to customers and employees, including our benefits and perks offerings. We realize and celebrate that our employees have diverse needs, and that this diversity requires flexible and individually directed support. Our priority is to offer a customizable program that can be tailored to the specific needs of each individual, whether they enjoy ice climbing in Alaska, want to retire by age 40, or plan to adopt 3 children.

Right. The part that I read was more along the lines of "We want the Pittsburgh office to be built up like Boston, which is 200 people". It was never an actual number, but they hinted at the eventual size. Oh well. I give up on trying to find it.

That's because it is their job and it isn't their money. Much different when you (the small business owner) have invested your personal capital into the business. Sorry, I'm biased!
