Hello,

My boyfriend and I are new to Pittsburgh and we are celebrating our anniversary/valentines day in February and we wanted to see if anyone had suggestions as far as something relatively cheap, but not too far from Pittsburgh (no more than 4 hours drive). We both have Fri-Sun off. We've considered Cleveland but realize it may be more fun to go in the summer. Nothing much to do besides rock and roll hall of fame or maybe a show in the wintertime. We are not much into winter sports either.

Ideas?

Try our favorite get away. Wellsboro, PA. That's where we go every year for Valentines. It's a tiny little town in the North Central mountains bordering NY State. It falls right in to your 4 hour time limit. Contact me for any info or just Google it. You will fall in love with it.

Cleveland also has an excellent art museum as well as a natural history museum and botanical garden. Otherwise it's tricky this time of year if you don't like winter sports.

How about Niagara Falls? It's only about 4 hours from Pittsburgh and there's plenty to do up there, especially on the Canadian side. Unfortunately the only downside is that you'll both need a passport to go over to the Canadian side due to new regulations, but it shouldn't be too expensive. At night, the Falls has a beautiful light show that both of you might enjoy.

Niagra is going to be very cold for Valentines day. If Cleveland is too wintry, then Niagra should definitely be out.

On a side note, this is out of your stated travel distance, but I just drove to NYC last weekend; its really not bad (drove <5 hours to Clinton, NJ, saved $100+ staying in a cheap hotel the night before and went into the city the next morning). Will do it again (just thought I'd share).

Maybe skiiing in Holiday Valley, NY or Seven Springs? They are nice resorts even if you don't ski.

I agree. I used to have a season pass at Holiday Valley when I lived in Erie. Ellicotville is a great little town to enjoy.

If you go north to Niagara, keep going to Niagara-on-the-Lake. Fantastic wineries. The Shaw Festival won't have started its 2010 theatre season yet, but they will be showing a film series in February.

Bedford, PA

It's going to be cold anywhere you go in the Northeast, NYC is no different.

if you have any interest in knitting/spinning/weaving, this is a nice place to visit: AUTUMN HOUSE FARM

they have a lovely farmhouse bed & breakfast available if you take a class, and it's really inexpensive.
