Hi everyone! We are from Scranton PA and on the weekend of Valentines Day, we will be coming to Pittsburgh to see the Penguins and we are looking for a good place to eat that night. We would like a place that is casual dining, or American dining, medium priced, and in downtown. We have a younger child who will only eat certain things, so preferably a childrens menu. I have heard that Grille on Seventh is good. Does anyone recommend it?

Any suggestions?

Our children like the Max and Erma's kids menu. It is on Stanwix St. downtown. They also have an all-you-can-eat sundae bar available for both kids and adults. They are only open until 8:00pm, though, so don't plan on eating there afterward if it's a night game.

I haven't been there, but I've heard good things about the Red Ring near the Duquesne Campus: Welcome to CampusDish at Duquesne University! (http://www.campusdish.com/en-US/CSMA/Duquesne/Locations/TheRedRingRestaurant.htm - broken link)

Someone who posts here works in a downtown hotel. She might have some better suggestions.

I drank once at the Grille on Seventh, couldn't tell you about the food, though. They had a nice selection of beer, although a little bit pricey.

If you're looking to eat somewhere downtown, do it before the game, as things downtown don't stay open that late.

Well, assuming the game is on Saturday, there are some things open late, but they're more geared to the theater crowd not the game crowd, so I guess perhaps it's the same thing. Max & Erma's is certainly nothing special, just a casual chain that happens to have an outlet downtown and is probably safest for the kid. I thought about this on and off last night too and I couldn't think of much in the way of other suggestions downtown given the scenario.

The Red Ring, which I wasn't familiar with, seems like a good bet.

Oh, well, yeah, if it's actually Sunday night give it up. V-day is the worst day to go out for dinner anyway. Worst service, etc. But I'm going on the assumption that it's Saturday since they're coming from out of town.

Hm, the schedule shows Friday and Sunday. The Sunday game is at 1pm. So maybe they're coming down Saturday, staying over and need a place to eat dinner that night, watching the Sunday afternoon game then driving back? Sounds like a plan. If you do mean V-day night, well, I don't think Red Ring should be a big V-day destination, but ya never know. Go early, right after the game or something.

Just a casual note, but the South Side is very easy to get to from Downtown, and has a lot more kid-friendly options.

And if you've got a car, there's an Eat N' Park on Banksville Rd.--it's the first exit out of the Ft. Pitt tunnel.
