Hello,
I am looking to attend Duquesne in the fall and was curious about the walk from the subway station to Duquesne.

Is that the closest station?
Is that a safe walk? I am a male and in my 20's. I am sure that during the day it is fine but are there any concerns with walking back at night?

Thanks

It's perfectly fine during the day. At night, use your street smarts and stay on the main roads with other students who are walking towards town.

Yes, Steel Plaza is the closest T station. However, there are a lot of busses that go from Downtown past Duquesne U and into Oakland. Years ago, the 61C was a 24hr bus that went from Downtown past Duquesne into Oakland, Squirrel Hill, then ended in McKeesport. I'm not sure if it's 24hours any longer though. I've walked to Duquesne a lot by himself at night without any problems. The school is on the border of a questionable area, but Fifth ave and Forbes ave are main roads and even at night you should see a lot of cars and some people walking there too, so you won't be alone. And, depending on where at Duquesne you'll be going, it's a 5-10 min walk there from Steel Plaza. I wouldn't be too worried about it at all. I've walked alone and drunk from Duquesne to Oakland and from the South Side, through the Armstrong Tunnel to Duquesne, etc. Never had a problem.

Someone told me once there is a way to get from the First Avenue station to Duquesne on foot. I don't know what that route is or even if that is true, but you might ask someone at Duquesne.

Can't be that hard, can it? Walk up to Forbes and hang a right?

That's what I was thinking! It's a no brainer! Brian's post made it sound like "you can't get there from here unless you know the secret."

Regardless, the route to the Steel Plaza Station will be more populated at night than the route to the First Avenue Station.

Yeah, you could pick up any 61 bus at the corner of 5th and Ross to get to Duquesne, but in the time spent waiting for the bus you could walk down 5th to 6th and to Forbes. It's probably less than a quarter mile.

I'm pretty sure in addition to any 61-series, you could pick up any 71-series and a variety of others that use the Forbes/Fifth corridor.

Sorry, in retrospect I can see how that was confusing.

So obviously you can walk over to Ross and up to Forbes and then back over to Duquesne. But Duquesne as the crow flies is something like only 500 feet northeast of the First Avenue station. So what I had been told is that there is a more direct way to get to Duquesne from the First Avenue station.

So I go to Duquesne and occasionally take the T up to Steel Plaza if I have to take a bus to school. I do the same walk you're talking about and it is perfectly fine during the day.
