There was a great article in the Post Gazette a while back by Brett Yasko, a designer in Pittsburgh who decided to test the stats on Pittsburgh's number of sunny days per year. This should clear up all those questions about Pittsburgh's climate.

Today is a cloudy day. Hot and very humid. And it looks like the rest of this week will be cloudy too.
Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania (15122) Conditions & Forecast : Weather Underground
Now let's compare our weather forecast to the sunniest place in the US.
Yuma, Arizona (85364) Conditions & Forecast : Weather Underground

I will take my own observations over this columnists. Thanks

LOL, I can't believe how negative some of you locals are. Today was a cloudy day? I thought it was partly cloudy most of the day with some rain that moved through in the late afternoon. And the rest of the week looks partly cloudy with a chance of rain. That is the forecast EVERY DAY in Florida from May through October. Nothing but hot, humid partly cloudy summer days with severe thunderstorms in the afternoon...and the occasional hurricane. But they call Florida the Sunshine State, and locals call Pittsburgh gloomy with no sunny days. Go figure.

Also, did you neglect to look at the temps in Yuma? 104 freakin' degrees! No thanks!

Miami only has 74
Orlando has 89
Fort Lauderdale only has 75

We don't have 145.

No, we certainly don't have 145 "clear" days. But most places outside of the desert don't, as you can see by the Florida stats. The problem is that Pittsburghers seem to associate ANY clouds in the sky as a "cloudy" day, even is the sun is shining for several hours. But when I was in Florida, most people would call it a sunny day if it was partly cloudy most of the day and a few brief showers moved through in the afternoon. It's a glass is half full or half empty kind of thing.

Is this anything like judging the crime rate in Pittsburgh based on what you see on the daily news?

And not to get off topic or anything, but have you actually ever been to Yuma, AZ? I have. Let's just say sunshine isn't everything... //www.city-data.com/forum/arizo...ving-yuma.html

It is the National Weather Service, not Brett Yasko, that sets the definition for "clear", "partly cloudy", etc. Most of the other weather websites use their definitions as well. Heck, by his definition, Denver probably has 350 sunny days a year. So if every locale used his criteria, Pittsburgh would still rate as one of the cloudiest places.

Exactly. Some people don't really mind cloudy days; others crave sunshine. But let's be honest. Pittsburgh is not a city of sun-filled skies. It's out-clouded only by Seattle, Buffalo, and maybe Rochester, NY.

You're right!

It was a beautiful day today until the rain moved in towards the late afternoon.

And it was welcome rain! It was so darn hot. The rain cools things off.
