There was a great article in the Post Gazette a while back by Brett Yasko, a designer in Pittsburgh who decided to test the stats on Pittsburgh's number of sunny days per year. This should clear up all those questions about Pittsburgh's climate.

No, we certainly don't have 145 "clear" days. But most places outside of the desert don't, as you can see by the Florida stats. The problem is that Pittsburghers seem to associate ANY clouds in the sky as a "cloudy" day, even is the sun is shining for several hours. But when I was in Florida, most people would call it a sunny day if it was partly cloudy most of the day and a few brief showers moved through in the afternoon. It's a glass is half full or half empty kind of thing.

It is the National Weather Service, not Brett Yasko, that sets the definition for "clear", "partly cloudy", etc. Most of the other weather websites use their definitions as well. Heck, by his definition, Denver probably has 350 sunny days a year. So if every locale used his criteria, Pittsburgh would still rate as one of the cloudiest places.

Exactly. Some people don't really mind cloudy days; others crave sunshine. But let's be honest. Pittsburgh is not a city of sun-filled skies. It's out-clouded only by Seattle, Buffalo, and maybe Rochester, NY.

It was a beautiful day today until the rain moved in towards the late afternoon.
And it was welcome rain! It was so darn hot. The rain cools things off.
