I doubt anyone wants "another Atlanta" but to tell people to stay away is not a good idea. I agree with goodgirl49.

It seems like a lot of Pittsburgh residents might inadvertently keep people away by being negative about the city and saying "why would you want to come here?" My son was even asked that when he chose to go to the Art Institute of Pittsburgh, instead of a school in California. That just doesn't create a good impression of a place.

It's like I said in a different thread many months ago, Pittsburgh is about the most schizophrenic place in America. Its residents all seem to shout in unison, "THIS PLACE SUCKS!" Then they pause, take a breath, and all shout in unison, "DON'T CHANGE IT!" It's a truly strange phenomenon that there seems to be widespread agreement that the place has lost a lot of its lustre and yet there's so much resistance to doing anything about it.

It's almost like they are fatalistic that nothing can be done, and they just want the place to die, which is sad.

And yet of all the places I have lived, I've never witnessed so much civic pride and civic involvement as in Pittsburgh. I guess it's because those who are thus involved know they're in a fight for the life of their city against that fatalistic inertia. That's really the big clash going on in Pittsburgh right now, and it's not at all clear who will win. That's a sad state of affairs for a city that is verily overflowing with potential.

It's good at least that there are some people like this who see the city's potential and wish to promote it. Hopefully, there are enough people like this so they won't be outnumbered by the naysayers.

good post Drover...I am not saying for anyone to not come in, but I can understand how someone might think that way, kinda of put myself in their shoes kinda of thinking...I seen areas get ruined with cookie cutter homes...I just would hate to see that happen to my hometown...I heard parts of the North are getting like that...I do not judge my fellow pghers, we are what we are..god bless america!

It's almost like they are fatalistic that nothing can be done, and they just want the place to die, which is sad.

I do not think most people actually think that way or wish that goodgirl...I never met anyone in my entire life who thinks that way in pgh, never!

I think that you'd have trouble finding any rational person who can genuinely say that they think Pittsburgh has "lost a lot of its lustre". Perhaps someone who has been here since the 50's or 60's could say that, but Pittsburgh has been slowly improving since its nadir at the fall of the steel industry. A lot of people simply don't feel fulfilled unles they are complaining about Pittsburgh. It's pretty hard for me to take it seriously.

Pittsburgh isn't that horrible. Once there are people who see that the "Pittsburgh sucks" excuse is just that, an excuse to keep others out, that excuse will die off. Personally, I think another big reason alot of people would stay would be unfriendly people.
