Barring some drastic change, football will continue to be the number one sport is the US and Pittsburgh.

Personally, the only professional sport I follow is football because its interesting/complicated and there are a very limited number of games per season so just about every game is important. NHL, NBA, MLB play too many games for me to care much about an individual one... I mean a playoff series alone can be 7 games, that almost half a NFL season!

That's the beauty of baseball, lose Saturday night, you don't have a week to regroup, you're back out there Sunday afternoon.

As to the op, Hockey is a regional sport, only 11 million watched game 7 of the Stanley Cup, I think Seinfield reruns get better ratings.

So we don't fit your assumption.

BTW.... are we elderly or middle aged?
Middle aged lol. i wasn't saying that all big pens fans are middle aged, but I do see more big pens fans that are young.

Americans don't grasp hockey, it confuses them, and since most of them can't even skate they've never had the experience of playing the game on any level at all. Many don't know the rules and/or they think there are no plays or strategies. It looks like mayhem to them only because they are baffled by it.

They also just don't understand the skill level and endurance involved.

Absolutely!

The Penguins do more things for the community than the other major sports in Pittsburgh do. More charities, more visits to the hospitals, more for season ticket holders (delivering them in person???). They (the players) are also way more accessible to the fans.

JR,

You could say the same about baseball, if you truly understand the game, you know that it is never boring and it changes on every pitch. I've been to a lot of hockey games, have a decent grasp of it, appreciate the skill needed, just not a big fan.

Different strokes.

Most Americans understand baseball and have played it at some level in their lives. It's a common game for kids to play pick-up and all you really need is a ball and bat (like with wiffle-ball). Football is much the same in the USA.

Hockey also is one of the most expensive sports to participate in.....paying for the ice time, skates, stick, puck, goals, and at least some protective equipment.

We're talking about the majority of Americans....you may be that exception that does grasp it, but most Americans don't.

You don't have to play on ice. Street hockey in a parking lot does the trick also.

We didn't even know what hockey/ street hockey was when I was a kid. When did we get a franchise, 1967? I was 13 yo. I really like hockey now and can't wait for the playoffs.

I was only 5 months old when the pens got their first cup in '91 so I really couldn't imagine no hockey in Pittsburgh and not going to at least 4/5 games a year.
