I am looking to move back to Pittsburgh since my husband and I currently commute to Pittsburgh from an hour away. I grew up in the east, but we're thinking we'd like to live in the west or south. He works in Greentree, but we can't afford to live there. I was thinking Brentwood would be convenient for both of us, but I have no idea what traffic is like from Brentwood to Greentree or Brentwood to Oakland. Any suggestions would be great! (School district is important, as well, since I've got a toddler who will be going to school eventually!)

Beechview's in Pittsburgh Public, which may not be ideal. Dormont could be an option.

Don't overlook Mt. Lebanon or Scott Twp, lived in both those areas, very affordable.

I'd also say Mt. Lebanon or Bethel Park. Dormont would also work. All areas have excellent schools and you'd still be close to Greentree and Oakland.

Dormont would get you into the Keystone Oaks School District, which is decent. (Green Tree is part of that school district as well.) From there, you could get to Oakland via U.S. 19, the Liberty Tunnel and the Boulevard of the Allies.

Or you could T/bus if you don't want to deal with traffic and Oakland parking.

thanks for all the suggestions! I grew up in the east, and I'm just not familiar with other areas. If it wasn't for the horrid Squirrel Hill Tunnel traffic, my preference actually would be the east so i could be closer to family. but on the positive side, I will get to experience different parts of Pittsburgh this time around!

I think Brentwood would be a good choice, or neighboring West Mifflin. Take 51 into the city and out to Oakland. 'A little tougher to get to Greentree...make your way over to 88 and Castle Shannon and then to Mt. Lebanon and on to Greentree via Washington and Cochran Roads.

Castle Shannon gives you good connections to both areas and affordability.

If you can't yet afford Greentree then Mt. Lebanon is off the table. Bethel Park is probably comparable to Greentree, and maybe a better choice if you can afford it (you should be able to find something nice for 100K . )

Dormont is a good option. Its convenient to the city. Its quite a bit more dense than the other options though. 'Similar to what you might find in the East End.

Good Luck!
