Perhaps the people who fall for some of the junk sold on tv can identify with a bumbling idiot. I recall some of the commercials from the 1960's. They were funny. A construction worker glued his hard hat to a beam, and hung in the air, flailing his legs.
That was to show the strength of crazy glue, it wasn't meant to be humorous....
Also, whenever a commercial features one black man and one white man, the white man will be the one who has to be given the message. It's almost never the other way around.
If there is a woman in the commercial, then she's the one at the head of the class. So the Commercial Hierarchy looks something like this:
Black Man trumps White Man
Woman trumps Man
Children are Cute
...And the networks can't figure out why fewer and fewer people tune in each year.
The hell they can't. You think network execs are as racist and misogynist as you. Wrong. It is the Internet, nothing anymore sinister than that that is responsible for the attrition in TV viewership. If, in fact, such a thing is happening.

I've noticed this for about the last 15 years.....it's always a man--and usually a white man--who is the villain/bumbling idiot/dumb a s s/etc., and sometimes with a black man in the commercial to be the sane and sensible one. There would be a huge outcry if those "village idiot" roles were filled by other racial or ethnic groups. Occasionally, one sees a "dumb blond" ad but not too often. White men are the only group left that it is PC to portray in those roles.
and white men are always the burglar in a home alarm TV commercial, what does that say or mean?
It says, "don't go there". And why should they? What, white guys don't commmit burglaries? Are you kidding me? A black guy is much more likely to be a mugger on the street than a second story man. ADT knows this. If it was exclusively black men committing burglaries, the technology of home security would include lethal countermeasures as well as reporting to the offsite monitoring station and/or local precinct. Do you really want a return to political incorectness? Be careful what you ask for.
My wife says God gave men a brain and a penis, but not enough blood to run them both at the same time. So, our level of intelligence is calculated on what body part we're using at the time.
