On April 16, 2008 then-candidate Barack Obama promised, “As President, I will ensure the U.S. provides leadership in enforcing wildlife protection agreements, including strengthening the international ban on commercial whaling. Allowing Japan to continue commercial whaling is unacceptable.” But indeed, the proposed deal guarantees whaling for the next ten years.
What? Whoa. Back this boat up.
Obama's stance now:
Quote:
“Is it possible that the Obama Administration will capitulate to a proposed plan that permits Japan, Norway, and Iceland to resume commercial whaling?” asks the actor [Pierce Brosnan] in a letter to the president in the Huffington Post.
“As unlikely as it sounds, the answer is yes. The Obama Administration has indeed supported, behind closed doors, a dangerous new proposal to overturn the global whaling ban.
“Since President Ronald Reagan first helped usher in the international ban on commercial whaling, every American President has reasserted our nation’s strong leadership in the fight to save the whales.
So is this just another of his empty campaign promises? Honestly, there were a few things that I was happy about when Obama was elected, and his stance with regards to the environment and animal/wildlife welfare were two of them. There is now nothing left to admire or like about this guy. He's a sell-out shill.

Oh gawd not another right wing hypocrisy fest. You all care for whales all of a sudden? How about caring for people too. Some of your most ardently held beliefs smack of eugenics or ethnic cleansing or seperatism. Did you see video of the last whale hunt Japan held? An entire flotilla couldn't prevent them from setting out to sea. They clearly had something to prove. Maybe we should nuke them again? Reagan was Reagan, if Presidents since his administration have maintained his example that's great. Obama is not required to do likewise. The flip flop is disappointing as it is just one more thing for the right to use but the right have never been big champions of wildlife or the environment. They aren't now.

Those scenes of whales being shot and slaughtered are heartbreaking.
sanrene, is that actually you saying that?!!!! if you think that movie was bad, you really should see "the cove" and see what the japanese fishermen torture the dolphins with.

I can't speak for anyone else, but I happen to be an ardent supporter of wildlife and animals everywhere; however, most of my conservative friends are too. Nice attempt at pigeonholing, but this isn't a right/left issue. It's an issue of Obama putting his own interests above the whales he once claimed to be in need of strengthened protection and ONCE AGAIN doing the exact opposite of what he campaigned on. Most of what Obama stands for I do not agree with on principle, but this was one issue where we HAD common ground and now he's lost that. No wonder even the far left is turning on him. Does this moratorium on commercial whaling not bother you other than it gives Obama detractors more fodder? That speaks volumes of your character.

Good for Brosnan. Obama should keep the promise he made and I'm glad he called him out on it.
I totally agree. The left does not own the market on animal/wildlife preservation, sorry. This is an A-political issue as far as I'm concerned.

I'd rather not watch things like that. I've seen enough of it to be sickened and enraged.
I really don't get the logic behind obama's decision, but he needs to reverse it and go for an all out BAN on whaling.
Believe it or not, I am an animal lover at heart and abhor practices such as this. Equine transport and slaughter is another one.

I've noticed that, too! All of sudden with the oil spill and whaling the repugs have become TREE HUGGERS, enviro-nazis! Hilarious what they'll say or do in their hatred of Obama .....and fun to watch......pretty soon they'll be protecting owls in the northwest and bringing food to the Polar bears ....LOL!
Again I don't see why everything has to be politicized. You can care about wildlife, marine life and the environment and still have certain political views.
Being a conservationist and/or environmentalist doesn't have to interfere with your beliefs. How those things are implemented may but the basic beliefs don't have to be.
