Of course everyone knows. Like the others pointed out, it's taught in the very first years of school.

I'd wonder where you got the idea that people don't know such a basic part of history.

Without reading any of the replies, the "Americas" were named so in honor of explorer Amerigo Vespucci, an (I believe) Italian explorer and cartographer.

Edit: Why do you need to bring politics into this?

Please. CNN/MSNBC/HLN/Whatever are just as bad

It's a sad state of affairs when some of the least biased news comes from freakin' Comedy Central. That's the reason I watch Jon Stewart and Steven Colbert..
