NEW ORLEANS — Oil from the nation's worst spill could soon end up at gas stations, construction sites and even grocery stores once BP sells the crude taken from a ruptured well in the Gulf of Mexico to raise money for wildlife protection.

Energy giant BP PLC announced this week it will donate its share of the proceeds generated by selling the oil captured from the well to fund efforts to protect and restore wildlife habitat along the Gulf Coast. [Anadarko and Mitsui havent decided yet what to do with their shares.]

Once that crude hits a refinery, the oil could end up in a wide array of fuels and products including gasoline, diesel, heating oil, asphalt and plastic — including the bags used at grocery stores, the cases for cell phones and microwaves. It also can be used as raw feed for chemical companies.

"I think it's an eye-opening experience for people who don't give it much thought when they finally realize how much their lives depend on oil," Langlinais said.

Makes a lot of sense to me. We need the oil, and BP needs to pay off this huge cleanup.

It is an eye opener about how many products necessary and unnecessary are made with oil. Not sure whether we'll start paying serious attention to that.

Even though I'm upset with BP over this disaster, I have no problem with BP selling the captured oil to fund wildlife efforts on the Gulf Coast.

I used to get my essential oils from fish . . . but now, I guess I'll have to cave in to Monsanto flaxseed.

I wish they'd capture all of it. I don't have a problem with them selling the oil. What else are they supposed to do with it?

You obviously have no clue how gas gets to the pump.

...add to that the only company you'll be hurting is the local guy with the BP sign. The gas BP refines will just end up at the station down the street.
