A White House statement calls the $400 million aid package announced Wednesday “a down payment on the United States’ commitment to Palestinians in Gaza, who deserve a better life and expanded opportunities, and the chance to take part in building a viable, independent state of Palestine, together with those who live in the West Bank.”
The commitment includes money for new schools, infrastructure and repairs throughout the Palestinian territories, but, as the Guardian points out, there’s no mention of how the U.S. plans to get banned construction materials past Israel and Egypt’s blockade of Gaza. —PZS

Economic aid for the region increased from $1 million in 1975 to $75
million in 1994 (just for the west bank area). Since then Palestinians (for west bank and gaza regions) have received over 2 billion in U.S. economic assistance.
We also give to United Nations Relief and Works Agency a tidy amount for food, shelter, medical care, and education.
FY2003 $134 million - FY2004 $127 million - FY2005 $108 million
FY2006 $137 million - FY2007 $154 million - FY2008 $184 million
