For kids though with no other means of support..that's a moot point.
It becomes a point when they are old enough to understand and want to make choices for themselves..then being free or being a slave matters.
Children born into slavery generally had no destiny to look forward to outside of enslavement. Not so with children born free.
One small difference. The white kids had their freedom.
Define "freedom" for a white child of farming parents back then and even now. As minors, they would have still been under the jurisdiction of their parents, they couldn't have just run away and expected a higher quality of life somewhere else. Their parents would have expected them to do their filial duty and work on the farm for the good of the family. Those farming parents would have hoped for children that were strong, healthy and male just to have the extra free labour.
On the positive side, children on farms, whether "free" or as slaves would have had plenty of fresh air, sunshine and good exercise. And at least those two boys in that old photograph looked very healthy to me. Not overweight or obese as the average black child or adult is today. BTW do I need to post links to statistics currently showing that there is a current problem with obesity in the US black community?

Freedom for the white child meant simply waking up knowing that you are (1) white (2) not enslaved, and (3) that you will never be enslaved. Not all the "fresh air and sunshine" in the world can ever make slavery an attractive condition. And the obesity tie-in is irrelevant and quite frankly pathetic.

Somehow I just don't think that poor white kids over 100 years ago woke up each day with those thoughts.
Actually it's your perception and opinion of their reality.
Nothing to do with my opinion. It seems doubtful that (no matter how poor) whites would have preferred enslavement and oppression to freedom and the ability to carve out their own destiny.
