David Cameron issued the first formal apology on behalf of the British state as he announced the publication of Lord Saville's long-awaited report into the day that became the catalyst for 30 years of violent conflict in Northern Ireland [British soldiers opened fire on unarmed marchers while trying to police a banned civil rights march in Derry in 1972].
Denis Bradley, a former priest who played a key part in secret talks that brought about the IRA ceasefire of 1994 and who was on the Bloody Sunday march 38 years ago, said he was "amazed" at how damning the findings were against the soldiers. "This city has been vindicated, this city has been telling the truth all along."
Lord Maginnis of Drumglas, an Ulster Unionist peer, said the report was "one-eyed" in its emphasis on just 14 of the 180 violent deaths in the province in the preceding year. Bloody Sunday: Soldiers may face prosecution over 'unjustifiable' killings | UK news | guardian.co.uk

Martin McGuiness, now the deputy first minister of Northern Ireland, "was probably armed with a Thompson sub-machine gun" but there was no evidence he fired the weapon and this provided no justification for the soldiers opening fire.

No...he was just armed with a submachinegun is all....

The report also focuses on the actions of two republican gunmen and said that the Official IRA men had gone to a pre-arranged sniping position.
But Saville found that their actions did not provoke in any way the shootings by the parachute regiment.

Gunman(or terrorists as they are known by) going to a pre-arranged sniping position....but it was just a peaceful protest.

I wasn't optimistic that they would let the truth out, but I was very pleased that they did.

By the way, someone taking arms against an occupying army is not a terrorist.

What I know is that the North of Ireland is a part of Ireland, and is under English occupation.
Surely you know that?

Who decided that?
Would it not be up to the people living IN Northern Ireland?
You might not want to know how they feel,it would poke a BIG hole in your beliefs....

I know someone we can't ask: the innocent, unarmed civilians who were gunned down by the English Army on Bloody Sunday.

The day will come when a majority of those who live IN THE NORTH OF IRELAND want the nation to become one again.
It will happen, God willing. Look at it this way; 100% of those people living in the Republic call themselves Irish. Almost 50% of those living in "Northern Ireland" call themselves Irish as well. I rarely hear anyone call themself a "Northern Irish".
