Thanks Republicans.

Instead of cracking down on MMS, as he had vowed to do even before taking office, Obama left in place many of the top officials who oversaw the agency's culture of corruption. He permitted it to rubber-stamp dangerous drilling operations by BP – a firm with the worst safety record of any oil company – with virtually no environmental safeguards, using industry-friendly regulations drafted during the Bush years.

He calibrated his response to the Gulf spill based on flawed and misleading estimates from BP – and then deployed his top aides to lowball the flow rate at a laughable 5,000 barrels a day, long after the best science made clear this catastrophe would eclipse the Exxon Valdez.

The Spill, The Scandal and the President | Rolling Stone Politics

The decision by the department's Minerals Management Service (MMS) to give BP's lease at Deepwater Horizon a "categorical exclusion" from the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) on April 6, 2009 -- and BP's lobbying efforts just 11 days before the explosion to expand those exemptions -- show that neither federal regulators nor the company anticipated an accident of the scale of the one unfolding in the gulf.

U.S. exempted BP's Gulf of Mexico drilling from environmental impact study

In the wake of the BP disaster in the Gulf of Mexico, the Department of the Interior’s Minerals Management Service (MMS) has continued to issue “categorical exclusions” for oil companies, allowing them to bypass the last stage of environmental review before proceeding with drilling projects, an Interior Department official told ABC News Wednesday.

Like regulations?

Here's one on which BO refuses to comprimise.

They have special ships that could make a big difference in cleaning this up. But they were told by the State Department that they can’t because that act, Jones of 1920 prohibits ships that aren’t made in the U.S. to do such things in U.S. waters.”

Antiquated Law Prevents Foreign Naval Aid for Gulf Says Santelli, Heritage Foundation (http://www.businessandmedia.org/articles/2010/20100609163127.aspx - broken link)

I guess BO figures that regulation is there for a reason, huh?

Maybe someone will offer him enough money to look the other way while this regulation is trampled?

Seems to be SOP.

The only think that gets won or lost, is the election.... one in office, success or failure is not the same as winning or losing....there's no election....there's no game being played. If two people take a test and one gets a D- with a score of 61 and the an F with a score of 59, if you can consider one a success (or a winner), it only means that you have incredibly low standards.

Overall only 32% of Louisianans approve of how Obama has handled the spill to 62% who disapprove. 34% of those polled say they approved of how Bush dealt with Katrina to 58% who disapproved.

Check this out for all those loons who are bashing Jindal.

If there's any 'winner' in this unfortunate event it's Governor Bobby Jindal. 63% of voters approve of the job he's doing, the best PPP has found for any Senator or Governor so far in 2010.

Poor Obama is going down hill fast, the lame duck one termer has now ticked off even the democrats for his lack of leadership and poor decisions.

I say resign so we can find someone who can handle the job and not steal a paycheck like he did when he was a baby Senator in thugdown.

Public Policy Polling: Fallout from the Spill
While everyone is busy debating who is more competent--Bush or Obama--the Obama agenda moves forward largely unnoticed. Obama does not care a whit about these comparisons. And the idea that the SPEECH last night had anything to do with regaining the initiative on the oil spill or demonstrating Obama's competence is ludicrous.

From the start of this administration they have demonstrated that they are committed to exploiting every opportunity to advance their socialist agenda. As Rahm Emanuel said, 'Don't let a good crisis go to waste.' Early on Obama and company recognized the oil spill for what it was--a good crisis. And they determined to let it play out--the economy of the Gulf states and the environment be damned. That's why three days after the explosion of the well they turned down offers from the Netherlands (and up to 10 other countries) to send ships to skim oil off the surface of the waters. They were determined to let an accident become an econoimic and environmental disaster. The hit to Obama's image as a strong, capable leader was incidental and worth the price.

What's the agenda? Well Obama told us that yesterday. It is "green energy" and against fossil fuel. Obama is using this politically-engineered disaster to push for the so-called cap and trade bill in Congress. And he points to the damage to the environment caused by the spill to justify that massive tax and control legislation. The fact that the people and the environment of the Gulf states had to be sacrificed to advance this agenda is small potatoes for these ideological zealots.

Unfortunately for America and the residents and wildlife of the gulf coast, the man-child is lost, and has no clue how to handle the oil gusher. Why do you think he hired so many "Czars" to make decisions that a real President would make?

He's never managed anything, never even been in a low level supervisory position either in the private sector or in government. He went from being a college student, lawyer, college teacher, community organizer, state then federal senator, the straight to the White House, never gaining any leadership experience.

He's always been in positions where OTHERS provided him direction, and never had to make command decisions in his life until now, and he refuses to do so, relying on BP and his so-called advisors to make decisions for him.

It's actually sad he'll go down in history as the worst president to date.

Sad to see him use this disaster to push his agenda on us.

No wonder he has sit around for 60 days.

He is using this disaster to screw over the American people.
