i once read a historical novel sent in regency England. The new governess was appauled that her rich master wasted so much money on many expensive beeswax candles to fill his mansion. She said he should save the money on candles and give the money to the poor. The master replied "Why? So i can put the candlemakers out of work?"

Somehow, I think that's partly (but not completely) because Mexico dumps all it's poor, low skilled immigrants on the US. So their inequality numbers look better and ours look worse as a result.
