New York state legislature has just approved an additional $1.60 tax on each pack of cigarettes to make a total of $4.35 that the government is getting for each pack of cigarettes New York State residents buy. Glad I don't live in New York, the government is taxing us into the poor house and even when in the poor house, you can't even afford a cigarette anymore! This is getting ridiculous, leave us smokers ALONE!

I'd imagine the long term cost of health care (for all of us) associated with smoking is much more than anything you ever could complain about on the front end of the purchase.

There is a long established tradition in NYC of contraband cigs being sold on the streets, especially in Harlem and Chinatown (don't know about specific areas in the other boroughs, but they HAVE to exist).

This law will be a godsend for those who sell smuggled in packs on the streets.

Smoking cigarettes has got to be the dumbest thing on earth. Not only do you lose your health, but you have to pay to do it. And not only that, smokers these days are social outcasts. I watch smokers huddling in the winter, puffing on cigarettes outside non-smoking office buildings. Tax the hell out of them.

Made me quit when they bumped up to $8/pack. One of the best decisions I ever made.

Actually smokers die younger and consume fewer resources.
