Religion shouldn't be an issue. Her social views are bad enough.

It wasn't a liberal who attacked her and called her a "rag head". It was a right-wing Republican.

Hi TheStupid,

SC Democratic Party is almost exclusively dedicated to black issues. Therefore, this pushes the South Carolina republican party to look like the Chinese communist party, in the sense that the major political struggles are endogenous, not exogenous.

In other words, the social conservative SCGOP'ers are "at war" with the fiscal conservative SCGOP'ers. This is the root of the mudslinging, to control the dominant ideology of the party that is heavily favored to win, because so few white people are willing to vote Democrat. The social conservative strategy is to bring issues like abortion, religion, race, gun rights, and immigration to the forefront, while using "lower taxes" as a catch-all economic policy.

A better election to see this phenomenon in, would be the Thurmond vs. Scott. A black fiscal conservative just beat the **** out of a white social conservative (and the son of the state's most famous social conservative politician, Strom Thurmond) in the GOP primary. I think that SC GOP voters are saying that they are tired of Reagan-Bush style neoconservatism, and it is time for a more libertarian style of politicians. And as much as everyone hates it, South Carolina plays a major role as a bellweather of the ideology of the Republican Party as a whole.

It shouldn't be. But since she is a Rebuplican, they have to find something to harp on her for!

She has to. If she were just a sikh, or continued with her original name, the chances of her getting elected would be less. Same with Piyush Jindal. Converting to Catholicism and changing name to "Bobby" helps a little, if not a lot, to overcome a bit of bigotry that the stupid still adhere to.

There was already an attempt in that direction when "rag head" comment from such a bigot came about against Ms Nimrata Kaur Randhawa (AKA Nikki Haley).

She handily won her runoff yesterday so I think the issue is pretty pointless now.
