I would say that the general comes out on top of this little move that seems to me to get rid of Petraeus as an opponent in 2012. Maybe McChrystal comes out on top after all.
No. He proved he couldn't follow the or adhere to the chain of command. He put himself and his personal feelings above his duty and obligation(s). His military career is over, and extinguished unceremoniously.
A favor? No. But Obama did the American people a favor firing him.
I have liitle doubt that McCrystal knew exactly what he was doing. His name will not be on the fialed list the way both militrian ops are goign and even worse civilian.

I also believe Obama Hillaryed Petreaus and while I'm on that subject, I hope she never gets elected either because she's just like Obama. She's not a clone of her husband and she's also a big talker with no real doing experience since that's all a Secretary of State does - talk.
At least McChrystal will not be know as the General that "LOST" Afghanistan. I'll bet Petraeus won't be either. I figure we will declare a Victory and leave without losing anything.
I feel really sorry for the girls and women trapped in that culture. Born as property, live as property and die as property.
McChrystal has pretty much proven that among his gifts, he does not have a flair for politics. Whatever his next career might be (and retired generals usually do very well post service) he will unlikely be a political opponent to anybody.
No general wants to go home with his tail between his legs in a cloud of controversy. Obama did the only thing he could have under the circumstances and McChrystal will spend the rest of his life knowing he screwed up and caused a major problem for the Pentagon and the civilian leadership of the war. Between this and the Tillman cover up, he's washed up and disgraced. How can anyone call that a 'favor'?

McCrystal was the best general to lead a very difficult war in Afghanistan because of his relationships with the government. He will be painted as someone who let his country down, he can forget about running for office.
