In my opinion, inciting hatred is a form of a crime. I know plenty of folks disagree with me on that one, but it's just my perspective.

Hate speech laws are not a bad idea to me but in a country obsessed with the notion of free speech of course people are freaked out by that idea. Heck, curbing peoples ability and "freedom" to run around spewing hatred is actually doing them a favor. It will probably add a few years on their life and take away a lot of stress if they would just shut up and calm down.

"Speaking out" how specifically? When we are talking "crime" and prosecution, these things get very technical. What does the law say?

Did the teenager violate libel or hate speech laws? either way that is different from having having a book or belief.

Spain on the other hand is interesting.
Hate speech laws are a joke, one person can say something and not have a problem, another person says something similar it's considered "hate speech." It is an extremly subjective issue, and throwing people in prison for their words is not something you would expect from the West.

No it is not good, it is censorship and oppression. When you oppress people they turn to violence. I rather have someone have the ability to "hate" something with words rather then killing and blowing up people.

It's protective unless you're white.

One popular misconception some Americans have--thanks in large part to the liberal media who championed the disastrous Obama healthcare reform--is that you're a more enlightened and advanced civilization than North Americans are. But I see anti-semitism and neo-nazism are at an all-time high in both western and eastern Europe. It won't take much for another Hitler to rise around your parts of the world and USA, playing the big bad world cop, will have to come to dig your pacifist selves out of trouble again.

Some opinions are obviously uninformed and hilarious. I wonder where these people get their information about Europe?
I think the biggest misconception is the belief that Western Europe is monolithic.

Popular misconceptions about Europe include:

Muslims in France are allowed to were hijab.

Birth rates are at a replacement rate (most of Western Europe is at a sub-replacement birth rate).

Despite of the sub replacement birth rates, Western European socialism is sustainable.

German companies not overexposed to economic crisis.

Europeans are not abandoning socialism.

Racism and xenophobia do not exist in Western Europe.
