I cannot understand for the life of me why there has been almost no discussion here at C-D about the horrific situation in Egypt and in Syria.

Whenever someone posts a topic about the Middle East it's usually about bashing Israel, how horrible Israel is, how terrible the Israeli people are, etc. etc. ad nauseam.

The current situation in Egypt reminds me of a Dr. Who Episode.

In the Dr. Who episode, a new leader was picked to lead the country and if people felt he wasn't doing a bad job, they could vote to kill him. The leader was strapped to an electric chair and the more people that voted against him the more he got electrocuted until he died. And the next person in line would become the leader. Obviously being leader wasn't a popular position. There was always someone angry about something.

The same Principal is playing out in Egypt, people were unhappy over Hosni Mubarak economic issues including high unemployment, food price inflation and low wages where the catalyst for the revolution, You can argue that lack of free elections and freedom of speech were factors too, but these conditions were in place for years without any revolutions taking place. So after Hosni Mubarak was overthrown, and replaced with a newly elected leader Mohamed Morsi, again people are still not happy. It's only been a year since Morsi not nearly enough time to put into place any sweeping changes to help the economy and address the underlying conditions that caused the first revolution. After Morsi in 6 months or a year they will be calling for the ouster of the next president and so on.

The sad thing is the more unstable the country appears the worst the economy is going to get. No one is going to want to invest in an unstable country, let along travel there for tourism. In 2008 before the 2011 revolution, tourism accounted for 12% of Egypt economy, over 11 billion dollars in income, since 2011, visitors have decreased by 37%, and I'm sure this latest wave of demonstrations will encourage more people NOT to travel to the Egypt any time soon.

From Travel.State.Gov website:

Travel Warnings are issued when long-term, protracted conditions that make a country dangerous or unstable lead the State Department to recommend that Americans avoid or consider the risk of travel to that country. A Travel Warning is also issued when the U.S. Government's ability to assist American citizens is constrained due to the closure of an embassy or consulate or because of a draw down of its staff. The countries listed below meet those criteria.

Morsy is out.

Egyptian military ousts Morsy – This Just In - CNN.com Blogs

By the way, did anyone catch the comments this morning by Syria--that Morsy should step down since his people didn't want him??? Irony at its finest.

I don't see the Muslim Brotherhood going away.

Morsy was elected by the Egyptian people. He was unable or unwilling to bring about the kind of government the Egyptian people desired. And the Egyptian people grew impatient. The military stepped in to maintain stability. The Egyptian people now have time to craft the kind of government they want.

We haven't had many good clean, old fashioned military coups lately...

Hopefully this turns out alright.
