"Today I weep for my country. No more is the image of America one of strong, yet benevolent, peacekeeper. We flaunt our superpower status with arrogance. We treat U.N. Security Council members like ingrates who offend our princely dignity by lifting their heads from the carpet. This administration has directed all of the anger, fear and grief, which emerged from the ashes of the twin towers and the twisted metal of the Pentagon, toward a tangible villain, one we can see and hate and attack. And villain he is. But, he is the wrong villain. And this is the wrong war." -- Speech, March 19, 2003
"This is not some made-for-TV backdrop for a campaign commercial. This is real life, and real lives have been lost. To me, it is an affront to the Americans killed or injured in Iraq for the president to exploit the trappings of war for the momentary spectacle of a speech. I do not begrudge his salute to America's warriors aboard the carrier Lincoln, for they have performed bravely and skillfully, but I do question the motives of a desk-bound president who assumes the garb of a warrior for the purposes of a speech." -- Speech, May 6, 2003
"The president has now stated that the war in Iraq is the central front on the war against terrorism. But it was our invasion of Iraq which has turned that nation into a staging ground for daily terrorist attacks against our occupation forces. If we are serious about protecting our country from terrorism, shouldn't the central front be the war on al-Qaida? But at the White House, the president waves the bloody shirt of 9/11, and then subtly shifts the conversation to Iraq." -- Speech, Sept 10, 2003
I guess its a good thing that Byrd didn't offer Fritz Thyssen shares of UBC stuffed into the eye sockets of Geronimo's skull, or he would be even more despicable.
Besides the guy being a racist, he had no business making decisions that affect our lives for as long as he did. How old was he? 92, 93 ? WTF are we doing allowing or even reelecting someone that old. Sorry, but in pretty much all cases, a person that old cant do much thinking or working let alone having a responsibility of looking out for and making decisions that affect millions.
Im torn on term limits but geez, how the hell do we keep reelecting these people? Especially when theyre over 80?
I shall never fight in the armed forces with a Negro by my side ... Rather I should die a thousand times, and see Old Glory trampled in the dirt never to rise again, than to see this beloved land of ours become degraded by race mongrels, a throwback to the blackest specimen from the wilds. ”
— Robert C. Byrd, in a letter to Sen. Theodore Bilbo (D-MS), 1944
Quote:
Byrd joined with other Southern and border-state Democrats to filibuster the Civil Rights Act of 1964,[27] personally filibustering the bill for 14 hours, a move he later said he regretted
He sure did have a lot of regrets about race, didn't he?
It is comical to see the liberal Democrats defend a racist because he is a member of their "team" If Byrd was a Republican, you would read the Democrats/Liberals on this forum attack him. Instead, they contrive these b.s. answers about how he reformed. This is one of the unsettling aspects about politics and this forum...the shameless games people play. People have no conviction or sense of right or wrong. I'm sorry but you don't have to be a Democrat or Republican to recognize that Byrd was a bad person who led the opposition against the Civil Rights movement and was a racist. There is no telling what he did as a Klans leader to cause endless sufferring among African Americans and other minorities. I will repeat this again, joining the KKK is not like joining a fraternity and regretting hazing a pledge by throwing him into a trunk. This is the freaking KKK! Seriously, how stupid can people be to think a guy who led a KKK chapter for nearly 10 years is suddenly a person who feels completely differently about minorities.
It is pathetic how the same people on this forum will sell out and defend a person like Byrd because he was a Democrat. Pathetic! I feel the same way about Strom Thurmond. These were not good people regardless if people were stupid enough to elect them to office. They obviously denounced their racist ways to get re-elected. They may have been racists but they were not morons. They knew they were not going to get re-elected unless they denounced their racist past.
Byrd ended his association with the Klan in 1989! I love to see how they honor a bigot. They were right in saying he did it to get elected but they have it backwards.
Agreed, I'm suprised there were not more courageous Democrats who could stand up and acknowledge Byrd was a bad person. I'm a Republican but you will never hear me support Strom Thurmond or Jessie Helms. People have lost their sense of right and wrong in favor of supporting a party.
I'm sure that you have my post confused. I think Byrd quit the klan in 1989 to get elected, not originally. I know all about him and I still think he is a jerk o--!

Ooooooooooo, you're going to have a really hard old age. lol Bad karma.

It's also simplistic to believe a former Klan leader and leader of the Civil Rights opposition is no longer a racist because he apologized. Actually, that isn't simplistic, that is just plain stupidity. You can say whatever you want but only a moron would genuinely believe Byrd reformed especially considering he was a politician who sought re-election.
