It's also simplistic to believe a former Klan leader and leader of the Civil Rights opposition is no longer a racist because he apologized. Actually, that isn't simplistic, that is just plain stupidity. There is a difference between being a confirmed and open leader of the KKK versus having some tabloid rumored ties to White Power.

You don't even know how I feel about Senator Byrd one way or the other. I'm commenting on your childish insistence that people and the world are so neatly categorized as good or bad.
