Sure people will have a LITTLE money in their pocket but unemployment benefits are not going to help the economy in any noticeable fashion.

Im sick of this "WE HAVE TO DO THIS NOOOOOOOOOOOOW or ____ will happen!!! HURRY!! WE HAVE TO GET THESE BILLS PASSED THAT WE DIDNT READ TO SAVE THE UNIVERSE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! ARGHGHGHGHHGHGHGHHGHGHGH!!! (Insert your favorite fear mongering phase here)!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!"

And how long will the extend them for? Another 6 months? A year? That is going to fix the economy nor fix what needs fixed. That is going to make companies/employers more comfortable to start hiring again. That isnt going to help the housing mess. All it will do is prolong the troubles.

But hey, screw it. Go ahead. Extend benefits. Keep spending. As a matter of fact, since some of you really believe spending billions we dont have when we are already in a mess, is going to fix things....why not just print out about 2 trillion dollars and dump it in the economy. Or send out checks of about $250,000 dollars to every family. Heck, make it $500,000. According to some of these geniuses we need to keep spending. SPEND SPEND SPEND. Yeah, thatll work! To hell with our future. To hell with the long term problems it will cause. Lets just keep spending!

Like in the past, when unemployment has been above 7%, they are always extended and it's never paid for in advance. It's just what's done.

The fact that this is being used as an election strategy is just sad. It's like if the Democrats had cut Iraq war spending and left the soldiers fighting in their boxers. It would've won them some votes, but it would've been heartless and immoral.

I agree. It is sad, but no surprise, that they are playing politics with the lives of millions of Americans.

"Another recession" ? Like we've recovered from the first recession ?

Handing people who are not working checks will not FIX any problem.
It will hide the problem and prolong the agony.

BUT it will get them through Nov elections.

Republicans would be very happy to see us go into another deep recession if it meant that they could make Obama look bad and not extending unemployment benefits in times of very high unemployment will accomplish just that. Unfortunately, millions of unemployed people get hurt in the process with no hope of getting a job if the recession worsens.

Fear mongering is alive and well in both parties.

They've been giving extensions and they haven't been helping.

The only thing that will work is to bring jobs back but you notice, not many of the unemployed are demanding the politicians do anything about that.

I know how dare democrats not work to pass this bill by simply agreeing to fund it in a manner that wouldnt add to the national debt.

Instead democrats said no guess they want to increase the national debt or they would have agreed to it not adding and it passing and many Americans getting the checks.

Instead they are on vacation

I mean it, as does the article, in the technical definition of recession.
