We might not be celebrating our Independence Day today if not for the aid of the French during our Revolutionary War. On top of that, the French people gave us our national icon, the Statue of Liberty, as a commemorative gift of our independence. At the time, we almost didn't cough up enough money to pay for the pedestal.
Granted, we paid a heavy price to save their bacon in WWII and they may look down on us vulgar Americans, but why do we muck around with nonsense like "Freedom fries" instead of considering the French as our closest ally, as we do the UK and Israel?
Canada, that big red bit on the map north of Vermont, and our biggest trading partner, don't get no respect.
What has Israel done to be considered an ally?
I totally agree with the Canada statement. But what's so ironic is that Canada was founded by Loyalists who fled the 13 colonies. There were way more than 13 British colonies in North America-there were about 20-including Nova Scotia, Quebec and Ontario.
I always think jokingly, if we had lost our war, we today, would just be like Canada-politically and culturally.
The only people who consider Israel a staunch, unwaivering ally are the right-wingers, and it has more to do with their nutty religious convictions than actual diplomacy. But we give so much money to Israel, the better support us in everything, anyway.
Actually Israel should be remembered on America's Independence Day for the successful Entebbe commando raid releasing the Air France hostages on July 4, 1976. Therefore causing the USA's 200th birthday celebration to be a real freedom celebration for a group of people held by hijackers/terrorists. Operation Entebbe - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
