Making these guys completely legitimate is not going to help the situation at all. Making it legal for them to transport whatever drug and anything else over the border isn't going to slow them down whatsoever. It's already easy enough - why make it much more so?
Serious non-sarcastic question: Then what would you suggest?

The way I see it, we're screwed any way you look at it.

Legalizing the cartels and their product would just mean it would be impossible to stop them from taking control over vast portions of the USA and doing to us what they're doing to their own country.

As it is, one cartel controls one region of Mexico, another controls another and it's almost a civil war fighting over who gets control over what. Giving them free reign over the USA - so that the cartels can fight over who rules over Texas, who rules the Midwest, and so on is insane.

Legalizing drugs, legalizes the cartels completely. It wouldn't make them less greedy and want to agree to limited profits - they could agree to limited profits for all now.

Take control over the border away from them.

I don't believe in going to war in Mexico - first innocent bystander gets killed with a US bullet and all hell would break out. And how can that not happen? Can you look at a Mexican in Mexico and know if they are Juarez cartel or Sinaloa cartel or just some kid on the street?

Legalizing drugs just gives the cartels much more power, much more money to fight over. And don't think they won't kill Americans who get in their way, they would.

They already have. Meanwhile DHS & Obama turn a blind eye placing thier political agenda above the safety of Americans on/near our Southern border.

I never said legalizing would be a *good* idea, rather it being a potential lesser of bad ideas. Considering...

- War in Mexico is a really bad idea, as you said
- Expansion of turf wars in America is an unacceptable nightmare. It's bad enough how much we got already, shouldn't make it worse.

To Missouri Gal: Arizona and Texas are never going to vote Democrat anyway. California is solid Democrat, so there's nothing lost. So how is this a political ploy?

If you sent in troops it would just turn into another Iraq. Troops pinned down constantly with hit and run tactics by the drug cartels. If you are going to invade Mexico you need to take all troops out of Iraq and Afghanistan and put them on the border then invade. Once we push them back finish the damn wall put towers every 100 yards with guards with machine guns to guard them shoot a few hundred idiots trying to cross the border then they might get the message.

Potheads HAVE a pass.

It's called the 9th Amendment.

It's the LAW.

Our government is not listening to its people AGAIN. It is truly sad that there are locations of the United States of America that AMERICANS can not go because of another country. And that our Government feels that nothing needs to be done about it. Truly sad.

El Paso is asking for help from the US government but yet their city and county officials are boycotting Arizona over SB1070. If you (El Paso city gov.) don't give a rat's behind about the violence in AZ why should we care about yours?
