Now, I do not know if this bloke was an illegal immigrant past what the article says but if he was so what, he threw himself on a grenade to save his mates in his section , in my eyes that should be an automatic MoH, or VC, GC, depending on which military he he was in.

I'm curious, who believes he should not have been awarded the MoH because he may have been an illegal immigrant ?

(Last year the Army Times contributed to the debate with a trenchant article suggesting that, under the Bush administration, the award scrutiny process had become moribund and overly "politicised" because of fear that a nominee might turn out to be a future embarrassment. It quoted the 2008 case of Sergeant Rafael Peralta, who was considered for the Medal of Honor after throwing himself on a grenade in Falluja but was denied it because – some believe – he was a former illegal immigrant)

Joining our military is a fast track to citizenship. If an immigrant is in the service I'd have to believe they are in the country legally. In either case, if they are serving along side American soldiers in war zones they should get any medals they have earned in the line of duty.

Not only do I believe that anyone who displays such actions as to recieve the medal of honor, deserves it, but I'd say that if they were illegal citizens, they should automatically recieve honorary citizenship, with all past trangressions forgiven.

He joined the marines the day after he got his green card, the man was a
hero and he deserves the MoH without a doubt.

Quote:
Sgt. Peralta, 25, was a Mexican American. He joined the Marines the day after he got his green card and earned his citizenship while in uniform. He was fiercely loyal to the ethos of the Corps. While in Kuwait, waiting to go into Iraq, he had his camouflage uniform sent out to be pressed. He constantly looked for opportunities to help his Marine brothers, which is why he ended up where he was on Nov. 15. A week into the battle for Fallujah, the Marines were still doing the deadly work of clearing the city, house by house. As a platoon scout, Peralta didn't have to go out with the assault team that day. He volunteered to go.

The US military accepts US citizens and legal resident aliens - not illegals.

Well that depends.

Some are trying to list children of illegal immigrants, who were born in this country as illegal as well.

The wording of naturalization can be gray to say the least at times.

I am anti-illegal immigrant as anyone, but as a decorated 15-year veteran, the man clearly redeemed himself in his act of heroism and deserves the Congressional Medal of Honor...IF....he has a clean background (i.e. no drug running, 15 illegitimate kids running around, etc.).

He should receive a medal. Legal or illegal.

I do not think you can join the military as an illegal. The "fast track" for citizenship only applies to legal aliens. So marksman84 is more concerned about "illegitimate kids" than him being an illegal? That is hilarious. Gotta be kidding me! LOL
