My experience in the south shows there are A LOT of down right fat white people there so it is disingenuous to try to blame it all on the blacks. Seriously, visiting from California it is hard not to notice the morbidly obese lard butts every where.

Black females skewer a state's obesity rates.

You can hate on fatties and WM shoppers and still keep your progressive creds.

Didn't you know that?

Is anyone really surprised that blue states don't have enough to eat?

Then answer me this, why did you ask for per capita data, then decide to use raw volume numbers? And for the record, the South has the largest population of all census designated regions by ~40 million over second place, so of course actual volume is going to be larger. That is why we use per capita data and not volume.

They don't have the money to buy prepared food there. They have to subsist on what they can afford. You can't look at everything through an American prism.

It's right there and they're walking past.

Kids- Oatmeal in it's unflavored form is about the most economical way to go for breakfast. Instead they'll get capn crunch, or the flavored instant oatmeals at 3x's the price. Can we look at this as a mixed problem, that they have no earthly clue how to manage money or recognize what's econo? Coupons are obvious to most, but stretching a dollar for value is apparently not.
I agree. In the US, it's a mixed problem. For you "carbaphobes", rice, beans and the like are an inexpensive source of protein. Potatoes have Vitamin C in them. It's not the potato that will make you fat, it's what you put on it. Same with bread.

We should not count black females in the data. Being black, they aren't really American anyway. They're like Asian-Americans and Eskimos in that respect. On the other hand, one friend of mine doesn't count Irish-American as genuine Americans. And to tell you the truth, I'm a little reluctant to count Indians as 100% American since their forefathers did not arrive here on ships. Of course Nevada, and the people living there, should not be counted as real America. And who really cares about Rhode Island?

Anyhow, getting back to the nation's obesity. The poster said that black females skewer the obesity rates. Well, midgets and dwarves are the demographics that really skewer a state's obesity statistics. See, a midget can get fat by eating much less than someone of normal size. Consequently, a midget who eats a normal diet would still become overweight. Yet an obese midget counts the same statistically as a regular person, thus skewering the data.

We ought to think real hard as to whether vegetarians ought to be counted too. It's like they're trying to deceive us with some trick diet.

Among 2007 BRFSS respondents:
 •
25.6% were obese.
26.4% of men and 24.8% of women were obese.
The obesity prevalence ranged from 19.1% for men and women aged 18--29 years to 31.7% and 30.2%, respectively, for men and women aged 50--59 years.
By race/ethnicity and sex the obesity prevalence was highest for non-Hispanic black women (39.0%) followed by non-Hispanic black men (32.1%).
 • The obesity prevalence was higher in the South (27.3%) and Midwest (26.5%) and lower in the Northeast (24.4%) and West (23.1%).
The Obesity Society (http://www.obesity.org/statistics/ - broken link)

The South has a 27.3% obesity rate.

Care to guess how skinny those white southerners have to be to get that number with all those blacks throwing the curve?
That's because Blacks make up the poorest demographic of the population - the lowest economic strata. More Blacks generally means more poor people - which generally means inferior diet low in more expensive fresh fruits & vegis and high in cheap carbs and fat - which generally means more obesity.
It's pretty simple. The poor tend to be more obese. There's higher obesity levels in the South because there are more POOR people - Black, White or WHATEVER (either way - not very flattering for those Southern Red states to have so many POOR - and certainly nothing to brag about). Something is clearly not right when you have such a large portion of the population living in poverty - WHATEVER color they are.
