Shrink the federal government down to the minimum required by the Constitution.

I believe most of America or at least the ones who OWN guns, work for a living and create grass roots movements we would repeal 90% of all the taxes and start over. Reduce government and its spending and the roles they deemed themselves GOD!

We have to much government controlling social and economic behavior and the only ones defending this idea of increasing government "revenue" are elitist, commies, socialists and neoconservatives none of which belong in the united states GOVERNMENT!
RIGHT ON THE MARK (no pun intended)

The OP shows how liberals think. Social programs first. Never mind that we could probably give China Alaska and Hawaii and still be in the red. We do have a country to run here...

It is possible to help people and pay down the debt at the same time.

There is a problem with this naive economic thinking. If you cut American taxes its sets off a surge of business activity and emoployement in China and India. American business can't wait to put its tax savings into building or expanding Chinese factories, putting it in the Bank of Dubai, or hiring Indian Institute of Technology graduates!

2. VALUE-ADDED TAX

A VAT could be applied to all goods except food and medicine. This VAT would vary with the good being sold; however, an average of 20% is reasonable.
no it ain't I am avoiding anything that is taxed to death already. I'll just have to break the law and buy it cheaper in the black market, internet, craigslist, batering, too bad. You over do taxation and you get less commerce anyway you slice it.

Quote:
4. REMOVE THE SOCIAL SECURITY INCOME CEILING

The current social security income ceiling is $106,500. This would be removed, and all earnings would be subject to social security tax. However, the ceiling would stay in place for benefits. Any taxed income over the ceiling would be 25% allocated to helping the program stay solvent and 75% allocated to the general fund.
Please stop calling it social security, You know for a fact that the government is pretty much using it for war and debt interest rate payments anyway not for the social security ponzi scheme. Make it just regular income tax and stop naming it something different please.

5. TAX ASSETS

Anybody owning over $250,000 in liquid assets, second homes, or vehicles would be required to pay a progressive tax (increasing with the amount of assets owned) on them each year to the central government. This would be a sort of "federal property tax".
Well good luck with that, I know that it will kill the demand for those items then. Well not such a bad thing actually lower prices are better for poor people anyway. Good luck using this as an income generator because people will just not buy it as much then. If your motivation is lowering demand for those goods then ok but if it is to generate tax income from them that the idea fails. But those that can buy those items are rich anyway.

6. TV LICENSE

Require the payment of a $250 annual license for every TV-owning household. The elderly, disabled, and unemployed would be exempt. Require the top 1% of earners to pay an additional $750.
Good luck with that. Very unpopular. Also I will just use my computer. Good luck enforcing it too. TV tuner etc. Internet is taking over tv anyway who cares.

Now a tax on the internet would really rile people up. If you want to tax tv might as well be the internet. But you know what if you do that every single young person will riot. Hope and pray gov wont do it.

7. RAISE THE GAS TAX

Raise the gas tax to keep gas and diesel at a fixed price of US$6 / gallon, rising with inflation every year. Use the income derived from the tax to fund public transportation, bikeways, and walking infrastructure.
This idea will just stifle commerce again. I guess it's good if you want misery on the economy destroy the working class. MTA is already a bunch of wasteful corrupt transportation people. Come on 100k for a train operator and up for admins. Probably in the millions for admin and higher up people. Well if you want gov to over pay fine and every single year people pay higher ridership fees.

Maybe you want free transportation as well and subsidize it with tax money. meh.

8. BRING BACK CORVEE LABOR

Require all youth from all backgrounds to spend one or two years serving the government. Many great public works materialized in this manner; examples include the Pyramids of Egypt and the maintenance of the Roman road system. As they would be forced to work, easily supervised, menial jobs would be in order. A small stipend, meals, and dormitory-style housing will also be provided. The consequence for refusing to perform this labor would be prison time or a $200,000 tax.
Ok OK you want slave labor. Alright fine. As long as rich people have to do it as well I'm all for it. NO SPECIAL treatment and corruption please. All those sons/daughters from congressmen have to do it as well first hand. BTW prison time + 200k not good enough.

Make them go prison hard labor and worse than just going with the program.

But anyway these ideas are way to communist and forced socialism. Meh. Stifles freedom and innovation of course.

Gotta love #8. Who wants to guess the agency would be a newly minted federal one (rather than locally administered), with a few czars thrown in for fun?
