When this nation was founded, faith in a superior GOD and helping one another, when you saw they needed help was the character of our nation.
Everyone helped everyone, without any forced tax so the government could decide who got help and who didn't.
People with wealth, would help those without in the form of charity and giving to the church. The church was our first charity, our first hospital's, and took care of those on hard times.

In today's Me, Me, Me environment, the government has made us selfish.
People have been brainwashed to believe and actually expect the government to take care of us now. What happened to help thy neighbor? Today's turn a blind eye, would have never happened in communities of this nations past. Sure you had a few selfish, but the majority were caring and sharing people.

We no longer police our own. We expect the government to do that.
We no longer take care of our elderly. We expect the government to do that.
We no longer take care of the poor. We expect the government to do that.
We no longer educate our children. We expect the government to do that.

Our own government has made and created a very selfish society, driving division among the classes, compared to the USA of the past.

Does our government know what's better for you, than you yourself?

Actually there's a federal appellate court decision that states you arent' entitled to police protection.

People today are much too busy, or too afraid to get involved with helping others. There are still those that help whichever and whenever they can.

They are few and far between, unlike the USA of the past, when you could rely on your neighbor, instead of your neighbor being forced to help you.

Governments deems themselves gods by the idealogy and socialist ideas promoted in government, media and newspapers. People voted for it which is why you have the society of today.

Ah, the halcyon days of yore, where everybody was just taken care of locally!

I don't believe that everything was as rosy as you think in our past. If it was then there wouldn't have been a need for government to get involved in alleviating poverty. It's not that government knows better. It's an issue of logistics. Churches and charitable organizations did not have the resources to put together a response to economic tragedies like the Great Depression. I'm sure that churches and charities suffered along with everyone else in such an environment.
It's no coincidence that many of our government programs originated from the economic disaster of 1930's because the government was really the only entity that had any chance of dealing with it. And it was extremely successful. People (and churches and charities) saw the government as the ultimate safety net because of its success.
Does welfare need to be reformed? Yes. However, only reform. It would take a miracle plan to convince people to discard their safety net.

You mean the poverty the government(Hoover, FDR) created?

People still do help people, you just don't hear about it because it's usually family or those close to them.
